The sequence numbering scheme used for keeping track of the fragmented frame described in the said RFC is also for not very scalable, particularly in the scenario when the multiple communication links can range from a low speed (e.g., 56 kbps) to very high speed SDH hierarchy.
Sequence number field: The sequence number is an initially 6-bit binary number that is incremented modulo 2^6 (ranging 0 to 63) for every data fragment.
The first fragment sent for a PPP frame may have the sequence number set to any value (including zero), and the sequence number must subsequently be incremented by one for each fragment sent.

Thus, the eight bits of the first frame are compared with the bits in the same time slot of the third frame, the third frame with the fifth, the fifth with the seventh and the seventh with the ninth, in each case with corresponding time slots.
Thus the condition of the frame detection and synchronization circuit could be considered to be in a monitor mode in that it is simply monitoring the incoming data to determine that valid framing sequences exist.
Once the framing sequences are no longer valid and remain so for a period of time in excess of said predetermined interval, the error density detector will then provide an output signal on path 84 which is applied to counters one and two to inaugurate the search mode.

System for aligning transmission facility framing bits to the sonet H4 multiframe indicator byte - United States Patent ...
Received framing bits from the independent digital transmission facilities are stored at RAM locations in accordance with multiframe addresses of the framing bits relative to the multiframe format of the independent facility.
The frame is divided into three parts: the section and line overhead, which are contained in the first three columns; and the payload, which is found in the 87 remaining columns.
Thus, bytes containing four signaling bits and one framing bit for tributaries 0-27 are transmitted in sequence, after which the data for channel 0 of each tributary is transmitted, followed by the data for the other channels through to the transmission of the data for channel 23.

Scrambling of analogue electrical signals - Patent 4905278
To enable the joins to be located, a framing sequence is added to the signal in synchronism with the segments and which consists of a low-level signal having a frequency spectrum which is substantially similar to the spectrum of the audio signal.
The framing sequence was read from a framing sequence generator 122 in the form of a store as an 8 kbit/s serial bit stream with a fixed phase relationship with respect to the scrambled sound segments.
A framing sequence generator 230, synchronised by the framing sequence detector 206 supplies the sequence which is filtered by filter 232 similar to filter 122 at the scrambler and subtracted from the video signal in a subtractor 234.

Bit framing is handled by the modems and interfaces, and is not a part of this standard.
A potential problem on asynchronous links is that framing may be lost during the transmission of multiple abutting bytes (i.e., where the next start bit immediately follows the preceding stop bit).
In response to a NAK, to assure that a receiver is in the reframing mode and has not already framed on an erroneous message, the transmitter may optionally increase the synchronization sequence to: a.

Abort sequences may also be caused by bit errors which occur while the frame is travelling from the transmitter to the receiver.
A frame which is terminated by an abort is received by the receiver in the normal way, but marked as being "aborted".
The sequence of all 1's may be used to fill the gaps between frames (or alternatively a continuous series of flags may be transmitted).

The present invention describes a circuit which allows a data stream to be scrambled by continuously running uninterrupted Pseudo Random sequence without multiplying errors.
Bit errors occurring between the transmitter and receiver do not cause the scrambling registers at the two ends to become out of synchronization and they remain in synchronism unless a timing slip occurs to cause the transmitter and receiver to lose synchronization.
