 Framley Parsonage, Introduction
In their introduction to the novel, they show that the printings of Framley Parsonage since the Cornhill instalments have more than slightly misrepresented the text as words and phrases have dropped out, some readings have been reversed from their originals, and of course the suspense structure of the book lost.
Framley Parsonage was first translated into Russian in 1861; it is profoundly, quietly realistic; in 1864 there was a German translation; Tingay lists no French translation (this doesn't mean there wasn't one, but rather that it was not distinguished in any way); in 1952 Framley Parsonage was translated into Norwegian.
Trollope's first serialised novel was Framley Parsonage, and it is the first of his novels to reach a huge readership.

Framley itself was a pleasant country place, having about it nothing of seigneurial dignity or grandeur, but possessing everything necessary for the comfort of country life.
Framley church was distant from this just a quarter of a mile, and stood immediately opposite to the chief entrance to Framley Court.
Framley is in the eastern division of the county of Barsetshire, which, as all the world knows, is, politically speaking, as true blue a county as any in England.

`Framley Parsonage` is the fourth of Trollope`s six Barsetshire novels, and clearly the author had fallen in love with `the dear county`.
The plot concerns Mark Robarts, a young clergyman, whose school and university friendship with Lord Lufton and his wife`s friendship with Lady Lufton, the young lord`s mother, cause him to be presented with the valuable living of Framley at an age when most clergymen are still curates.
Mark is a good and honourable pastor, but if he has a fault it is that of ambition for higher ecclesiastical preferment. This leads him to unwise socialising with influential politicians, to the dismay of his patroness, Lady Lufton, and eventually to imminent ruin.

Beyond the church, but close to it, were the boy’s school and girl’s school, two distinct buildings, which owed their erection to Lady Lufton’s energy; then came a neat little grocer’s shop, the neat grocer being the clerk and the sexton, and the neat grocer’s wife the pew-opener in the church.
This gentleman, the Rev Evan Jones, might from his age, have been the vicar’s father; but he had been for many years curate at Framley; and though he was personally disliked by Lady Lufton, as being Low Church in his principles, and unsightly in his appearance, nevertheless, she would not urge his removal.
Over and above these, there was hardly a house in the parish of Framley, outside the bounds of Framley Court, except those of farmers and farm labourers; and yet the parish was of large extent.

Trollope, who felt the chief purpose of a book was to be readable, would no doubt be pleased with this eminently ear-friendly production of his work.
Rife with irony and populated by virtuous heroines, good uncles, impossible mothers, and the usual louts, these stories are distinguished by Trollope's fine dialogue and pacing.
Thorne is rather predictable, things do heat up in Framley Parsonage: bailiffs come knocking on the overly ambitious clergyman's door, and we fear that his compassionate sister may contract typhoid fever as she escapes the wrath of her betrothed's mother.

The SF Site Featured Review: Tooth and Claw
This quote, found at the beginning of Tooth and Claw, is from Anthony Trollope's novel Framley Parsonage, published monthly through 1860-1 in Cornhill Magazine, a new periodical aimed at the family market.
Framley Parsonage, for those genre readers who haven't dipped much past the Freshman Lit toehold in the vast ocean of 19th century novels, comes more or less in the middle of Trollope's Barsetshire series, which follow the lives of a set of primarily gentry and ecclesiastical families in an imaginary English county.
Framley Parsonage was considered by many reviewers and readers of the time to be a pleasant, pastoral tale, to contrast with the fraughtly moody writings of the likes of Wilkie Collins, also popular at the time.
