 Amazon.ca: Books: Truffaut
Throughout the story of Truffaut's 51+ years the authors pull no punches, and not everything they say is complimentary to their subject.
Truffaut practiced what he preached in early films like The Four Hundred Blows and Jules and Jim, which electrified a new generation of American directors who came of age in the 1960s.
The authors quote a letter from Truffaut in which he bears his claws, but it is Godard who appears to have been venomous.

 Amazon.com: Books: Truffaut : A Biography
Truffaut was notorious for bedding beautiful women, usually actresses in his films, but every relationship (with the exception of that with his divorced wife, Madeleine, who was as loyal as he was faithless) was brief.
Truffauts courage failed him; rather than introduce himself, he fled to the darkness of a nearby cinema and watched an old Chaplin film.
Truffaut's childhood is exposed as sadder, but possibly less harsh than his image (and The 400 Blows) suggest.

Writing alongside the likes of Eric Rohmer (with whom he wrote a groundbreaking study of Alfred Hitchcock), Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, and Franois Truffaut, Chabrol developed theories of authorship that are still influential today, and attempted to revolutionize the cinematic value system.
Boasting a strong cast that included Huppert, Sandrine Bonnaire, Jacqueline Bisset, and Jean-Pierre Cassel, the Csar-nominated film provided an incisive look at class tensions, jealousy, and the politics of murder.
One of the founders of the Nouvelle Vague (New Wave) movement, Chabrol began his filmmaking career in 1958 as the director, writer, and producer of Le Beau Serge.

salon :: :: movies :: review :: "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie", By Charles Taylor :: Page 1
The defining moment of Franois Truffaut's films might be the line "People are wonderful" from "Stolen Kisses." If you tried to sum up Buuel with a similar maxim, it could very well be "People are appalling." Imagine that said with more amusement than distaste, and you're close to imagining the spirit of this film.
To enjoy "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" you have to be willing to laugh at how movies turn us all into easy prey.
On some level these bourgeoisie are comforting, not least because they allow this unrepentant old atheist to prove that Jesus was wrong: It's the rich who are always with us.

 The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
The directors of the French New Wave occupied two fairly distinct branches: those who rejected and re-defined conventions (Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Chris Marker) and those who loved the traditions of classical Hollywood cinema and sought to revitalize the form (Franois Truffaut, Claude Chabrol, Louis Malle).
But Umbrellas is very far from being Hollywooden fluff: Demy used the form that was so special to him to meditate on the nature of love, loyalty, class and beauty.
Jacques Demy belongs firmly with the latter group, and his 1964 musical The Umbrellas of Cherbourg serves as a fine manifesto for that school of filmmaking.

Like the similarly themed JULES ET JIM, Truffaut's film is once again based on a novel by Henri-Pierre Roch.
The narrative style of TWO ENGLISH GIRLS follows the traditional format of a Jane Austen period piece, while its emotionally complex story line, symbolically loaded cinematography, and attention to famous works of art--especially Rodin--give it an intellectual sophistication and a seductive sheen.
