A guerrilla war waged by the francs-tireurs provoked savage reprisals.
France tactlessly insisted, and when the King refused to discuss the matter further or to see the French Ambassador, Bismarck managed to make it appear that France had been insulted.
It was fully expected that France would now sue for peace, but the newly formed republic affirmed its intention of continuing the war, and began the mammoth task of building new armies.

Several instances of German brutality in France were also evident, and in many cases their severity was greater than in Belgium.
A reasonable estimate of the data shows that somewhere between 12-15 percent of Belgium's pre-war national wealth or approximately 22 billion francs, left the country or was destroyed by the Germans during the war.
Only via Belgium into Northern France is there a level pathway, clear of obstacles, of imposing breadth for most of the distance, and laced with every facility for the rapid deployment and continuing supply of large military forces.

In fact, this law may be called a complete vade-mecum for the franc-tireur, and, drawn up as it is by no mean strategist, it is as applicable to-day in France as it was at that time in Germany.

As loyal Communists, they obeyed instructions to accept Germany's conquest of France in June 1940, but they were also delighted when Hitler attacked the Soviet Union in July 1941: at last the French Communist Party was under orders from Moscow to terrorize the Nazi occupation forces.

These forces (known collectively as the “underground” and, in France, as the maquis) were supplied by Allied airdrops and coordinated from London by radio.
After the French defeat at Dienbienphu (1945), France withdrew from the conflict; but the 1954 Geneva Conference brought no permanent peace, and Communist guerrilla activity continued in Laos, Cambodia, and South Vietnam.
In the Soviet Union guerrilla warfare was included in instruction at the military academy; in the field it was so brilliantly organized that it constituted a continual threat to the German rear and contributed greatly to the German disaster on the Eastern Front.

The subject of the film is a group of foreign-born, mostly Jewish partisans, who, as members of the Communist Party’s Main d’oeuvre immigré (MOI), formed into special detachments of the Francs-tireurs-partisans (FTP) to engage in acts of direct violent resistance against the French and German authorities during World War II.
Sketching (probably too) briefly the background of their immigration to France, in the twenties and thirties, and their deepening communist engagements, the interviews center principally upon the decision to hazard acts of violent resistance to Nazi occupation.
The crumbling of the fragile post-war consensus of memory in France, beginning in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, could not but influence understanding and representation of the Resistance.

It was quite ironic that the arguments of pacifists in France, Britain, and the United States, paralleled the rhetoric of German revisionists.
The brutal conduct of the German Army in Belgium and France in 1914 continued to poison relations between the three countries until 1925.
Its credibility rested on pre-war mindsets and doctrines: the memory of the 1870-1871 war against France, where the Prussian-led forces had indeed faced widespread
