  Lingua franca
Lingua Franca (Italian meaning "Frankish language") or Sabir ("to know") was an early pidgin language, used in the Mediterranean area from the 14th century or earlier and still in use in the 20th century.
According to the monogenetic theory of the origin of pidgins pioneered by Hugo Schuchardt[?], Lingua Franca was known by Mediterranean sailors including the Portuguese.
Through a process of relexification[?], the Lingua Franca and Portuguese wordstock would be substituted by the languages of the peoples in contact.

ASSESSORATO AL TURISMO DEL COMUNE DI MARTINA FRANCA - www.martinafrancatour.it
The main attraction of the town is definitely the old town centre, a typical example of baroque art, with its smart streets, its white lanes, its elegant mansions and its stately and monumental churches.
Besides a fascinating landscape, marked by the ancient “casedde”, the famous “trulli” and the typical local farms called “masserie”, Martina Franca is surrounded by a Karst territory, rich in suggestive caves.
So Martina Franca is a very popular touristic site, not only for its rich and precious architectural, historical and artistic heritage, but also for its cultural activities that reach their best expression in the famous and awaited “Valle d’Itria Festival”.

 Musica Franca: buoyant Baroque bassoon
Known for an inspired synthesis of French and Italian styles, Musica Franca is dedicated to performing the lush compositions written for bassoon and continuo during the baroque period—in particular the work of composers Michel Corrette and Joseph Bodin de Boismortier.
Musica Franca easily captures the playful, inventive spirit of Corrette's compositions, with many of the movements displaying the all-or-nothing passion that characterized much of his work.
Instrumentation is varied — sometimes even within the same piece — in order to bring out the widest range of tonal colors, and Musica Franca performs the music in the same spirit of pleasure as many musicians of the 18th century: light, nimble interpretations performed with both nuance and joy.

Lingua Franca was a pidgin or trade language that flourished in the Mediterranean from perhaps as early as the 1300's until perhaps as late as the 1800's.
It was a blend of Italian, Provençal (or Occitan, the language of southern France), and Catalan (the language of the east coast of Spain).
A Creole is a grass-roots language: It is a language descended from a Pidgin that has become the native language of a group of people.

 A Glossary of Lingua Franca
Apart from a few curious and tantalizing quotes of this kind, Lingua Franca seemed to be lost forever, since it died before the advent of the tape recorder or of anthropologists anxious to record a moribund form of human speech, however bizarre, and even laughable, it may have seemed.
It began to falter shortly after the arrival of the French in Algeria in 1830, and by the time Schuchardt began to study it at the end of the nineteenth century it was already virtually extinct, although it was probably still well-known to older folk..
And -- in my humble opinion -- a startling clue to the lost Lingua Franca language, which, as the Archbishop of Palermo declared in the seventeenth century, was once known in every house in the great cities a short hop away across the blue Mediterranean.

In the final section of the paper I've explored what it might mean to transpose the concept of pattern languages from the more spatial, fixed-site domain of architecture and urban design, to the more fluid domains (in which time and roles become important) with which interaction designers more commonly deal.

November 5, 2001 — The death, two weeks ago, of Lingua Franca, the great magazine about intellectual and literary life in the academy, was not only sad news for the magazine's followers and admirers — it was a shock.

The original lingua franca was a tongue actually called Lingua Franca (or Sabir) that was employed for commerce in the Mediterranean area during the Middle Ages.
The designation “Lingua Franca” [language of the Franks] came about because the Arabs in the medieval period used to refer to Western Europeans in general as “Franks.” Occasionally the term lingua franca is applied to a fully established formal language; thus formerly it was said that French was the lingua franca of diplomacy.
