Johnston produced a good deal of the usual society portraiture of the time--including a nude photograph of a debutante that prompted the girl's outraged father to file a lawsuit--but she was also an important photodocumentarian.

Art Journal: American visions at the Paris Exposition, 1900: another look at Frances Benjamin Johnston's Hampton photographs
Here is my first point: Hampton willingly gave itself up to Johnston's camera, and the single-mindedness with which it did so (bringing to a halt most other activities at the school) helped to produce images of stunning clarity and intensity.
For those several winter days, with their silvery light and barren landscapes, the school exchanged the process of learning for the practice of posing, agreeing to become photographic subjects well before Johnston triggered her shutter.
Hampton's official magazine, Southern Workman, reported Johnston's presence at the school in early December 1899.

 Carrie Mae Weems
In 1996, the Williams College Museum of Art invited visual artist Carrie Mae Weems to collaborate on an exhibition project dedicated to the history and legacy of the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (now Hampton University), using Frances Benjamin Johnston’s Hampton Album of 1900 as her point of departure.
Located on the Chesapeake Bay in Hampton, Virginia, Hampton was founded by Williams College alumnus Samuel Chapman Armstrong in 1868 as a school for “select Negro youth” and 10 years later, dispossessed Native Americans.
Despite Armstrong’s last wish—that Hampton remain “true to the red and black races of our country”—the pioneering program of educating Native Americans ended in 1923.
