Frances had the refined taste for the good life and had grown up in Nutley with attending servants.
Albert predicted rightly, that whenever Frances was called upon to speak about the play, it would cause her to cry.
As for the Goodrich house on Nutley Avenue, it was not far from the home on Walnut Street where Frank Stockton wrote his classic short story ''The Lady or the Tiger.'' However it's unlikely that young Frances would have met Stockton as he moved from Nutley and died when she was 12.

Goodrich's affection and admiration for both Frances and Albert is obvious, but it more or less echoes how all who were part of their milieu felt about them.
After navigating through their very different childhoods —she was a child of privilege and he the son of a poor widow who put him on the stage to help the family survive— the author follows their early careers as actors, her two first marriages, and their eventual private and professional partnership.

Goodrich begins reading: "`One of the most complex and sustained criticisms of Hellman is contained in a recent book, "The Stolen Legacy of Anne Frank" by Ralph Melnick (Yale University Press).
In his research, Goodrich learned that when the Hacketts were first hired by Bloomgarden, he'd said that he'd settled with Levin.
Goodrich also feels Melnick's claim that the Hacketts were "malleable and willing to follow Hellman's direction" is another falsehood.

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, By Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett.
Working from Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett's Pulitzer-winning drama and the unexpurgated "definitive edition" of The Diary of a Young Girl, adapter Wendy Kesselman renders a play whose keystone is not the spirited young diarist's faith "that people are really good at heart" but a more heart-rending faith in her own soon-to-be-snuffed potential.
It's a powerful, less sugar-coated end to the world-famous story of a caged adolescent batting her dreams against the bars of an Amsterdam attic.
