Frances Lankin is a Canadian administrator, and a former politician and trade unionist.
Lankin was born in London, Ontario, and educated at the University of Toronto.
Lankin was elected Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for the Toronto riding of Beaches—Woodbine in the 1990 provincial election, succeeding retiring NDP MPP Marion Bryden.

He was born in Fort Frances, Ontario to a blue collar family.
After Rae retired from politics, Hampton became the leader of the NDP on June 22, 1996, beating Frances Lankin, who many had considered the front-runner, on the third ballot.
Leadership candidate Peter Kormos and his support generally went to Hampton rather than Lankin, which was seen as important to Hampton's victory.

Ms Lankin: The bottom line here is that while there was an agreement for the schedule of hearings, we all know the overwhelming public response that we have seen.

Lankin will bring a much-needed fresh perspective to United Way, which supports local agencies serving poor and disadvantaged households in Toronto, and undertakes an annual fundraising drive that raised more than $65 million last year.
Lankin is also tough on issues related to child poverty, women, long-term care and families.
Lankin's appointment, therefore, should create hope on two fronts: first, that she will bring energy and commitment to United Way; and then that a sense of regeneration will spill over to encourage needed new directions for the city.

Frances Lankin was hired in June, 2001 as president and CEO of Canada's largest and most powerful United Way agency, and she began work there almost a year ago.
Lankin, in her fashion, managed to quell negative concerns on both sides.
Lankin says this will be a board-driven process, and the United Way board is very diverse, perhaps the most diverse board in the city in terms of its representation of the city's different interests and cultures.

The party's health critic, Frances Lankin, has been on a mission to stop the practice since her mother Frances Ollmann, 87, was tied to a bed during a stay at a local hospital.
Lankin said she has received "hundreds and hundreds" of letters describing similar stories about the use of hospital restraints.
Lankin, a former NDP health minister, introduced a similar bill last November but it died when the legislature was prorogued.

Howard Hampton (born May 17, 1952) is the leader of the Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP) and a Member of Provincial Parliament from Kenora-Rainy River.
During the NDP government of Premier Bob Rae, he served as Attorney General and subsequently Minister of Natural Resources.

With the departure of Frances Lankin there doesn't seem to be anyone else in caucus who could step in to the job.
If Lankin wanted to lead the NDP she'd have to come out and say "the social contract was wrong" or "we were wrong about auto insurance" otherwise she'd be seen as a Rae clone.
Lankin is as happy as a clam with the United Way and anyone who thinks that some anachronistic loud-mouthed shnook like Sid Ryan or Peter Kormos would be leadership material better get their head examined.
