 Francesco Antonio Bonporti
Francesco Antonio Bonporti (baptised in Trento 11 June 1672, died in Padua 19 December 1749) was a very special artist and also a man of the Church.
He liked to define himself as an "amateur of music" and his name only emerged from a silence which had lasted for two centuries some decades ago when a number of musical scholars discovered that some of Bach’s "interventionem" came from his "Opera X".
As this Recitativo dal concerto in F major well demonstrates, his work was characterised by the delightful inventiveness of its rythmic forms, the brilliance of its harmonies, and the warm radiance of its melodic line.

We have also chosen his pupil Giovanni Battista Pergolesi; Francesco Antonio Bonporti, the abbot from Trento; that other "man of the Church", the Venetian Antonio Vivaldi; and Luigi Boccherini from Lucca.
There was a period in the history of music when the expression of human emotions in their purest and most limpid form became a primary need and intention.
Corelli, Durante, Bonporti, Vivaldi, Tartini, and before them Monteverdi and Frescobaldi, were the pioneers of a new way of "making music" and of a different style which would later culminate in the work of Bach and Handel.

Like Albinoni or Marcello, the Tridentine gentleman priest Francesco Antonio Bonporti (1672-1749) was one of those brilliant amateur musicians who composed `for pleasure'.
Bonporti was born in Trento, Italy of aristocratic family, trained in Innsbruck, Austria and then in Rome in the Collegium Germanicum.
Bonporti must have been a formidable violinist, as his later works, the Opus X Invenzione (copied by Bach and mistakenly included in the Bach Gesellschaft for years) the Opus XI Concerti and the Opus XII Serenate and Concertini show.

Francesco Antonio BONPORTI: Motetti a canto solo con violini per ogni solenità (1702).
Bonporti was one of those "gentlemen composers" of the 18th century who made their living in fields other than music (Bonporti was a minor cleric in Trento), but whose music nonetheless found a wider audience through publication.
The present six motets are Bonporti’s only surviving vocal compositions, and they are characterized by an inventiveness and intuitive feeling for the voice that Italian composers seem to have as second nature.

This is the first of 11 CDs dedicated to the complete works by Francesco Antonio Bonporti (1672-1749), a world première.
The Mottetti A Canto solo, con Violini Per ogni Solenità op.3 here recorded appeared in Venice in 1702.
Even though characterised by less bizarre writing than Bonporti's instrumental works - perhaps on account of their liturgical destination - the Six Motets are very effective compositions, denoting a fertile imagination.
