FRANCESCO CAVALLI (1 599?- 16 7 6), Italian musical composer, was born at Crema in 1599 or 1600.
His real name was Pier Francesco Caletti-Bruni, but he is better known by that of Cavalli, the name of his patron, a Venetian nobleman.
Twenty-seven operas of Cavalli are still extant, most of them being preserved in the library of St Mark at Venice.

Cavalli became a singer at St Mark's in Venice in 1616, second organist in 1639, first organist in 1665, and in 1668 maestro di cappella.
Cavalli was the most influential composer in the rising genre of public opera in mid-17th century Venice.
Cavalli wrote thirty-three operas, twenty-seven of which are still extant, being preserved in the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana (Library of St Mark) at Venice.

As a boy Francesco apparently excelled as a singer in the local choir; Venetian nobleman and governor Federico Cavalli noticed the boy and in 1616 persuaded the elder Caletti to let Francesco accompany him to Venice, where he would see to his musical studies.
In 1652 Cavalli's wife died, leaving most of her estate to him; during the next eight years he composed operas not only for Venice but also for Naples, Milan, and Florence.
In 1659 the French prime minister Cardinal Mazarin invited Cavalli to compose an opera to honor Louis XIV's marriage to Maria Theresia of Spain.

Federico Cavalli, the Venetian governor of Crema whose name Cavalli eventually adopted, was taken with young Francesco's voice and brought him back to Venice with him at the end of his term.
Cavalli was appointed second organist at St. Marks in 1639; at approximately the same time, he invested in the Teatro San Cassiano (the first public opera house in Venice [built in 1637]), and began writing operas for that theater.
Cavalli visited Paris twice, and a modified version of his Serse (1654) was given there in 1660 as part of Louis XIV's wedding celebration.
