		Francesco Cilea, (Palmi, near Reggio Calabria, July 26, 1866 - Varazze, near Savona, November 20, 1950) was an Italian opera composer.
		Born in Palmi near Reggio di Calabria, Francesco Cilea gave early indication of an aptitude for music when at the age of four he heard a performance of Bellini's Norma and was greatly affected by it.
		Cilea's last opera, premièred at La Scala in Milan in 1907 (15 April) under the baton of Arturo Toscanini, was 3-act tragedy Gloria, again with a libretto by Colautti, based on a play by Victorien Sardou.

		For me the high point of the CD is Federico's Lament from Cilea's 'L'Arlesiana.' The thing that comes through, in addition to the exquisite control of this difficult aria, is the utter conviction with which he sings without resorting to any of the more vulgar conventions of Italian tenors.
		Just listen to the first track from Cilea's 'L'Arlesiana.' He is equally good in the aria from Verdi's 'I Lombardi' and Donizetti's 'Il Duca D'Alba.' There are a few forced notes but nothing to worry about.

		L'arlesiana, given in Milan in 1897 with Caruso, won favour in spite of a weak libretto; Cilea revised it several times, and it has enjoyed modest success in Italy.
		His one unqualified triumph was Adriana Lecouvreur (1902, Milan), which won wide success with its appealing subject and rewarding title role.
