 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Francesco Petrarch
Francesco's earliest years were spent chiefly at Incisa in the ancestral district of the Valdarno.
Francesco disliked the career chosen for him, and devoted himself as much as possible to belles-lettres, thereby so incensing his father that, upon one occasion, the latter burned a number of his favourite ancient authors.
When Ser Petracco died in 1323, Francesco returned to Avignon and took minor orders, which permitted him to enjoy church benefices and only bound him to the daily reading of his Office.

Hypnerotomachia Poliphili - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The book is anonymous, but an acrostic formed by the first, elaborately decorated letter in each chapter in the original Italian reads POLIAM FRATER FRANCISCVS COLVMNA PERAMAVIT, "Brother Francesco Colonna dearly loved Polia." However, the book has also been attributed to Leon Battista Alberti by several scholars, and earlier, to Lorenzo de Medici.
The book is illustrated with 174 exquisite woodcuts showing the scenery, architectural settings, and some of the characters Poliphilo encounters in his dreams.
In the novel, an alternate theory of authorship is advanced, in which the author is a patrician Roman by the name of Francesco Colonna, rather than the Venetian monk.

An earlier reviewer remarked "Fortunately Joscelyn Godwin didn't try to reproduce Francesco Colonna's difficult and idiosyncratic Italian in English, otherwise the book would have been as difficult to read as 'Ulysses' and needed another volume just for footnotes." The correct word is unfortunately.
Francesco Colonna's legendary "Hypnerotomachia Poliphili" is a book that captures the spirit of its time and place in a way few others do.
On the other hand, it may well be that both Godwin's and the Corvine mannerisms go back to the common source, and attempt to reflect in English the peculiar voice of this Italian renaissance author, whose work was published in the time and place for which the eccentric æsthete Corvo felt such nostalgia and admiration.

Its enigmatic tale of the quest for love by a hero named Poliphilo, set in a landscape of antique temples, arches and tombs whose harmonic properties are illustrated in the beautiful woodcuts, explained the poetic richness of antique architecture in a way in which the later more orthodox treatises by Serlio and Palladio could not.
Its authorship is a mystery, thought by most to be a Dominican, Francesco Colonna, following the cryptic sentence made by the first letters of each chapter, but such is the work’s power that recent (somewhat implausible) claims have even been made for Alberti.
Printed in the same size (folio) and format as the original, this is a beautiful edition, fluently translated in an accessible style and accompanied by a short introduction (which accepts Colonna’s authorship), glossary and original woodcuts.

Exactly Five Hundred Years after its first publication by the great Venetian printing house of Aldus Manutius in 1499, Francesco Colonna's weird, erotic, allegorical tale, Hypnerotomachia Poliphili, was translated into English and reprinted in full, together with all of its 174 original -- and enchanting -- woodcut illustrations.
It has been called the first stream-of-consciousness novel, and is one of the most important documents of Renaissance imagination and fantasy.
The author (presumed to be Francesco Colonna, a friar of dubious reputation) was obsessed by architecture, landscape and costume -- it is not going too far to say sexually obsessed -- and its woodcuts are a primary source for Renaissance ideas on both buildings and gardens.
