Francesco Geminiani: a detailed informative biography
Francesco Geminiani was born at Lucca, in Tuscany, in December 1687.
Geminiani gained much support from the aristocracy and leading figures at the Royal Court, and was invited to play the violin before George I, accompanied at the harpsichord by no less than Handel.
Geminiani was undoubtedly fond of arranging his own works: among his transcriptions are Harpsichord versions (1741) of his Op.1 and 4 and Concerto Grosso versions of Op.4 (1743).

Geminiani, whose works provide a vital link between the Italian tradition from Corelli to Tartini, was a student of Corelli in Rome and Scarlatti in Naples, and came to England in 1714 (15?) shortly after the death of Corelli, never returning to Italy.
Geminiani nevertheless had an illustrious reputation as a teacher, influenced a large circle of pupils and was one of the most deeply respected, influential and celebrated violin virtuoso of his time.
Geminiani was on good terms with leading figures such as the Earl of Essex (who is said to have rescued him from debtor's prison due to the composer's predilection for acquiring paintings).

Geminiani's motives, of course, were not purely altruistic - his arrangements and performances helped to bolster his reputation and his capital.

Geminiani, a pupil of Corelli and Scarlatti, belonged to the conservative camp.
He enlarged the traditional trio of the concertino to a full string quartet by the addition of the viola and arranged in this heavy medium the trio sonatas of Corelli as concerti grossi-a clear indication that for the conservatives the trio sonata still dominated the conception of the concerto grosso.

Geminiani’s late works were not universally well received but listening now one is struck anew by his invention and mastery of genres — by his Telemann-like command of national styles and musical traits.
He is commendably unafraid to vary texture, to delay the tutti and to play with expected notions of form; in the Fourth, recorded here, we have an unusually shaped multi-partite finale, which employs a fetching Pastorale at its centre.
So Geminiani makes for ingenious listening and the little D minor shows immediately in its Andante first movement (the first of two) how well he writes for woodwind (specifically the flutes) and for yielding and pliant string responses.

Geminiani was noted for his contrapuntal technique and distinctive harmony.

Stereophile: Recording of January 2001: Geminiani: Concerti Grossi
In 1716 in London, violinist Francesco Geminiani, just off the boat from his home in Italy, was called to play before King George I. Worried that an unknown and somewhat less-than-stellar harpsichord accompanist would sabotage this crucial performance, the virtuoso requested that George Frideric Handel be his partner.
To celebrate the synergy between the Geminiani concerti grossi and the Academy, this two-disc package includes a facsimile of a 1770 pamphlet published by Hawkins that attempted to lay out both the history and manifesto of his group.
Throughout, the textures of Geminiani's canny orchestrations, in which the original solo lines of bass and violin are interwoven among the new orchestral parts, are given full reign to blossom into wondrous if lightweight frolics.

Whether out of respect for his teacher, or to "cash in on" his teacher's popularity is a matter of speculation; whatever his motive, Geminiani based his earliest published Concertos on Corelli's Sonatas for Violin and Continuo, Op 5.
His own Concertos, Op.2 and 3, appeared in 1732 and 1733, the Op.3 Concerti Grossi being amongst his most popular works at the time, and we take the opportunity to give one of the finest examples of these, the Concerto No.2 in g minor, at the end of this collection of 12 Concerti on Vol.
