Classification of demons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Classification systems are based on the nature of the demon, the sin with which they tempt humans, the month in which their power was strongest, the saints that were their adversaries, or other characteristics.
This is a classification of demons prepared by Michael Psellus in the 11th century and that undoubtedly was an inspiration for the one Francesco Maria Guazzo prepared later.
Francesco Maria Guazzo prepared this classification of demons based on a previous work by Michael Psellus.

Francesco Maria Guazzo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Francesco Maria Guazzo, aka Guaccio, aka Guaccius (15??-16??) was an Italian priest in Milan.
He described the eleven formulae or ceremonies previous to the vow to Satan, allegedly necessary to participate of the Sabbath; besides, Guazzo offered detailed descriptions of the sexual relationships between men and succubi, and women and incubi.
Guazzo established also a classification of the demons, inspired by a previous work by Michael Psellus.

Francesco Maria Guazzo, Italian Demonologist   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
A member of the Congregation of S. Ambrose ad Nemus, Guazzo was one of the most authoritative of the older writers upon witchcraft.
In his worry over this he went to a tavern to drink wine; and after he had sat there for a while he got into conversation with another woman who was there, and told her the cause of his sadness, explaining everything, and demonstrating in his body that it was so.
Guazzo relates a story in which blasphemy is ranked a greater sin than lechery: three monks fall victim to demonic wiles, and habitually slept with prostitutes.

Compendium Maleficarum The Montague Summers Edition by Francesco Maria Guazzo
It is interesting to read his thoughts of and praises for the likes of men like Guazzo, Kramer & Sprenger (authors of the Malleus Maleficarum), and the long litany of popes who issued Papal Bulls in support of the deadly machinations of the Inquisiton and their witch hunting offshoots.
The Milanese Monk of the Ambrosini, Francesco Maria Guazzo (also known as "Guaccio")didn't so much WRITE his famous best-selling Demonological compendium of the first decade of the 17th century as COMPILE it, taking from myriad more authoritative sources various tasty selections to appease his dark ecclesiastical appetite for outlandish and freakish historical incident and intrigue.
Know that GUAZZO however, had nothing or very little to do with any actual burnings or persecutions unless he be blamed for printing this work which caused and spread hysteria even further than it should have ever gone.

ERBzine 1474: Burroughs' Sailor Among Apes
Francesco Maria Guazzo and his witch-hunting manual, the Compendium Maleficarum.
This text points out an important difference between these stories and Burroughs' version of the tale he claims to have read; here (and in the Guazzo and Cigogna versions) the isolated woman is exiled to the island, whereas in some later versions she is merely shipwrecked (but suffers the same consequences).

I would beg people (Pagan, Christian, or otherwise) of today not to submit themselves to the very sickness and demonological excess and debauch that allowed our forbears to justify their deplorable actions, and Not Regress to their unreasoned state of disenchanted hatred.
My studies of Guazzo's work is in relation to THE ORIGINS OF GOTHIC LITERATURE, English and German mainly, as my interpretation of his and many another Malefic treatise is in relation the BIRTH OF FICTION, or BOOKS READ FOR ENTERTAINMENT, which Guazzo's was I assure the world not read strictly by Theologians or Lawyers!

Compendium Maleficarum : The Montague Summers Edition (Francesco Maria Guazzo)
This witch hunters manual was written by Guazzo, a rather uneducated italian monk, belonging to an obscure monastery, who had some local popularity among his farmers in northern italy, and who wrote this text to flatter one of his protectors.
It seems that this book's first edition in 1608 found very few readers, and that edition 2 in 1626 was published post mortem to commemorate a popular citizen, not to celebrate his 'science'.
