Francesco Maria Piave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Francesco Maria Piave (18 May 1810 5 March 1876) was an Italian librettist who was Verdi's life-long friend and collaborator.
Piave was born in Murano in the lagoon of Venice, during the brief Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy.
Piave died in Milan in 1876 at age 65 and was interred there in the Cimitero Monumentale.

Verdi was initially unsure of Piave's abilities and always harried him unmercifully, often having his work revised by others; Piave rewarded him with doglike devotion, and the two remained on terms of sincere friendship.
Piave had a wide vocabulary and a facile pen, and an uncanny ability for turning Verdi's drafts into verse with an economy of words that satisfied Verdi's insistence on brevity and provided him with the striking, illuminating expressions he sought.
It was Piave's willingness to meet Verdi's detailed requirements which provided the basis of their work together, and it is on this partnership that his reputation as a librettist must rest.

Francesco Maria Piave (18 May 1810-5 March 1876) was an Italian librettist who was Verdi's life-long friend and collaborator.
Like Verdi, Piave was a passionate Italian patriot, and in 1848, during Milan's glorious "Cinque Giornate," when Radetsky's Austrian troops retreated from the city, Verdi's exhuberant letter to Piave in Venice was addressed to "Citizen Piave." Unlike the constant Verdi, Piave was a womanizer, with a long string of mistresses.

Piave became official poet and artistic director of the theatre, and later held the same position at La Scala in Milan.
At the end of 1867, while he was working on a revision of the libretto of La forza del destino, he was struck by apoplexy.
Verdi helped him throughout his long, serious illness and took a personal interest in finding a publisher for an album of songs, the proceeds of which went to Piave.

Piave was born in Murano, Italy, on May 18, 1810 and seemed destined for a life of letters and philosophy.
Nevertheless, it was a tremendous talent that he had: to transcend, subjugate, refine, cut, lengthen and be adaptive to Verdi's sometimes intransigent demands.
Piave died in the Italian capital of Milan on March 5, 1876.

Some composers, notably Richard Wagner, wrote their own libretti.
Others adapted the libretto from an existing play, or had this done for them, as with Francesco Maria Piave, who adapted works by Victor Hugo, the Duke of Rivas, and others.
Sometimes the libretto is an entirely original work, as with the libretti Hugo von Hofmannsthal wrote for Richard Strauss.

Verdi had a special fondness for Macbeth, and the first version of his opera based on Shakespeare's play is arguably the most important work of his formative years.
But dissatisfied with the work of his librettist, Francesco Maria Piave, Verdi reworked the text himself and lavished the score with particular attention.
The premiere in Florence in 1847 was a great success, but for the Paris premiere in 1865, Verdi made substantial changes, adding dances and an entirely new aria, duet, chorus, and death scene.
