Personal relationships with Severi, however complicated in appearance, were always reducible to two basically simple situations: either he had just taken offence or else he was in the process of giving it - and quite often genuinely unaware that he was doing so.

The most important part of this collection is in the form of forty books of lecture notes, together with Segre’s degree dissertation, memoirs, articles, notes and a card index, containing a valuable collection of bibliographical indications divided according to topic.
He not infrequently proposes exercises, suggests topics for research or faces problems which have remained open because, in his view, the main purpose of an advanced course is to initiate students into research by putting tools and methods at their disposal and stimulating them.
It is no mere chance that the first efforts of Severi on numerative geometry, or those of Giovanni Z. Giambelli, or again some of Fano’s work, such as the paper quoted earlier, show the influence of Segre’s lectures.

There were in the region of 30 to 40 leading mathematicians who made major contributions; about half of those being in fact Italian.
The fashion and foundational attitude changed in algebraic geometry from 1950 onwards, leading to an axiomatisation and some acrimony as to the status of some results.
Many of the modern techniques were found, in embryo form, and in some cases the articulation of those exceeded the available technical language.
