In arranging vocal music, he applied brilliant trills, turns and runs to the model to produce a thoroughly idiomatic lute piece.
Francesco was buried at the church of Santa Maria della Scala in Milan, which was destroyed in the second half of the eighteenth-century to make way for the construction of the La Scala Opera House.
Among his disciples was Giovanni Maria da Crema.

Francesco da Milano 1497 - 1997: International Symposium
The International Symposium to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Francesco Canova da Milano organized by the Università di Milano, the Fondazione Marco Fodella and the Comune di Milano proved an irresistible opportunity to meet with fellow enthusiasts of the music of 'Il divino Francesco'.
Francesco's music was first published in 1536 by Marcolini, Casteliono and Sultzbach, but he pointed out that the undated publication, 'Intabolatura da leuto del divino Francisco da Milano novamente stanpata', may well precede these.
The five-hundredth birthday of Francesco da Milano was celebrated in style at an international symposium entitled "II divino Francesco nell'ltalia rinascimentale," organized by the Marco Fodella Foundation and sponsored by the Municipality of Milan and the University of Milan.

 FRANCESCO DA MILANO/ Paul Beier/
The primary objective of this recording appears to be the presentation of the material from the first lute book published by Francesco Canova da Milano (1497-1543), following what is thought to be its first edition and not the two later ones which were printed in Naplesbetween April and May 1536.
Leaving to one side such practical details, the disc is wonderful, as much for the beauty of the repertoire it includes as for the supremely attractive sound which Paul Beier obtains from a lute recently built according to historical and iconographical models.
Francesco da Milano, nicknamed in his day as "The Divine", was the first Italian musician of the Renaissance who attained international fame.

The greatest of them were: Francesco Kanova da Milano (1497-1543) and Vincenzo Galilei (1520-1591) in Italy, Luis de Milan (1500-1560) and Miguel de Fuenllana, (1500-1579) in Spain, Hans (died 1556) and Melchior Neusidler (1507-1590) in Germany, John Dowland (1562-1626) in England, Hungarian Valentine Greff Bakfark (1507-1576), Albert [Wojtech] Dlugorai (1550-1619) and Jacobus Reis in Poland.
The most famous in its time Italian componist Francesco da Milano (served at the courts of duce Gonzaga in Montuija, then of cardinal Ippolito Medichy) began to publish his compositions from 1536 and was soon famed both in Italy and in other countries.
These peculiarities are seen also in the phantasies of Francesco da Milano with their mimicking beginnings, passages, thematically depicted from the first phrases, ordinary accord codes and light melodic decorations in the appearance of grouppetto in cadences.

He has found that Francesco was born on 18th August 1497, that it seems unlikely that Giovanni Antonio Testagrossa taught him, since their paths do not seem to have crossed.
Among other things, he discussed a Francesco 'revival' in the 1560s as well as a 'refashioning' of his image by means of which kinds of works were attributed to him and most widely circulated.
All the pieces in the concert program were taken from the Intavolatura di Liuto del Divino Francesco da Milano, probably the first publication dedicated to Francesco's music (it precedes those of Marcolini, Casteliono and Sultzbachius) and included works that, although rarely executed in modern times, must have been particularly loved by Francesco's contemporaries.

Francesco Canova da Milano (1497-1543) was clearly the most important lute composer of the period, widely hailed throughout Italy and Europe as a whole, and reprinted into the early 17th century.
The present recording is a studio version of a concert held in 1997 in Milan for Francesco's 500th birthday.
It is taken entirely from a relatively obscure source, one which arguably predates the first Marcolini print devoted to Francesco in 1536.
