Francesco del Cossa, francesco del cossa self portrait, Italian painters, renaissance painters, artists biography, ...
One of the first records we have of him is in 1456 when he was an assistant to his father, Cristofano del Cossa, at that time employed in painting the carvings and statues on the high altar in the chapel of the bishop's palace at Ferrara.
Cossa after this worked in conjunction with Cosmè Tura, decorating the summer retreat known as the Schifanoia, and of the frescoes which remain, three can be safely ascribed to him.
In these works Cossa reveals himself as a painter of great power and originality, stately in his conceptions, grand and massive in portraiture, broad in modelling, simple and severe in composition.

Francesco del Cossa - Biography   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Cossa, the son of a stone mason, was born in Ferrara about 1436.
Cossa's style shared in and helped to define the characteristic Ferrarese manner of the time: his works are filled with cleverly folded draperies, improbable rocky landscapes, bizarre anatomy, and fanciful coloring.
While Cossa borrowed the characteristic anatomy of Piero, especially in his faces, he was no follower of that master, and Cossa's art always retains the mannered delicacy of local miniature painting and other North Italian sources.

Cossa's style is characterized by stiff, heavy drapery folds and a sharply linear rendering of complex surfaces.
He was much influenced by such Ferrarese painters as Lorenzo Costa, Francesco del Cossa, and Ercole de' Roberti, but his later works clearly show the influence of the Umbrians, Perugino, and Raphael.
Italian artist Francesco Guardi was one of the outstanding Venetian landscape painters of the rococo period, an age that produced refined, graceful, and brilliantly decorated works of art and architecture.
