Franchthi Cave is located in southeastern Argolid, across a small bay from the modern Greek village of Koilada.
The earliest burial found at Franchthi is of a Lower Mesolithic date: a 25-year-old male was buried in a contracted position in a shallow pit near the mouth of the cave.

The major site in Greece is the Franchthi Cave in the Argolid, which has a thick deposit of Mesolithic layers.
Fish bones and fish hooks appear in greater numbers, which suggests that fishing, was added to the repertoire of foraging activities pursued by the Franchthi people.
The wider contacts of the Mesolithic people at Franchthi can also be seen in the stone and shell ornaments that have been brought to light, and which my have come from distant sources.

Forty-five possible pieces came to light during excavations, and subsequent study classified 24 animal and human images unequivocally as "figurines." Of those, two are dated to the Early Neolithic, one to an Early/Middle transitional phase, eleven to the Middle Neolithic, six to the Late Neolithic and four to the Final Neolithic.
The pattern stands in marked contrast to the evidence of northern Greece where large and extensive collections of EN figurines are reported.
