Franciabigio - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
Franciabigio paid much attention to anatomy and perspective, and to the proportions of his figures, though these are often too squat and puffy in form.
In the court of the Servites (or cloister of the Annunziata) in Florence he painted in 1513 the "Marriage of the Virgin," as a portion of a series wherein Andrea del Sarto was chiefly concerned.
The friars having uncovered this work before it was quite finished, Franciabigio was so incensed that, seizing a mason's hammer, he struck at the head of the Virgin, and some other heads; and the fresco, which would otherwise be his masterpiece in that method, remains thus mutilated.

Franciabigio (1482-1525) was a Florentine painter of the Renaissance.
Franciabigio paid much attention to anatomy and perspective, and to the proportions of his figures.
Franciabigio attends more to linearity and balance in fresco recalling Massacio, while the complexity and Sarto's paintings reflect an understanding of the dissipating velvety colorful fabric of molding that characterizes Venetian work, and the development of sway that will "mannerize" art in the decades to come.

 Painters Of Florence - Franciabigio
When Andrea went to France, Franciabigio was invited to continue his series in the cloisters of the Scalzo, and painted two subjects, the Baptist taking leave of his parents, and his meeting with Christ in the desert.
Franciabigio assisted Ridolfo Ghirlandajo to design triumphal cars and arches for the wedding of Duke Lorenzo, in 1518, and painted a fresco of the Triumph of Cicero at Pope Leo's villa of Poggio a Caiano.
One of Franciabigio's best pupils was Francesco Ubertini, surnamed Bacchiacca, who began by learning of Perugino, when he was in Florence, but soon joined Franciabigio, and followed in the steps of Andrea del Sarto, whose smooth colouring and grey flesh-tones he adopted.

Such are the Madonna del Pozzo, in the Uffizi Gallery; the half figure of a Young Man, in the Louvre; and the famous picture in the Fuller-Maitland collection, a Young Man with a Letter.
These two works show a close analogy in style to another in the Pitti gallery, avowedly by Franciabigio, a Youth at a Window, and to some others--which bear this painter's recognized monogram.

 Franciabigio (Getty Museum)
Scholars know little about the training of Franciabigio, the son of a Milanese linen weaver, except that he assisted in the studio of a follower of Fra Bartolommeo.
When the friars of a church unveiled both their murals the same morning, not realizing that Franciabigio's was unfinished, the artist "almost died of grief." Giorgio Vasari reported that he tore into the wall "with a bricklayer's hammer." Franciabigio's damaged Marriage of the Virgin, still on view, testifies mutely to his rage.
Franciabigio's introspective portraits captured his sitters' spirit and mood along with their physical appearance.

In December 1508 the names of Franciabigio and Andrea del Sarto, who sometime between autumn 1506 and 1509 set up a joint workshop, were entered in the registration book of the Arte de’ Medici e Speziali, to which painters were required to belong.
This is the first in a series of male portraits typical of Franciabigio: the subjects, each of whom wears a hat, are mostly placed in front of a landscape, with their gaze fixed meditatively or piercingly on the onlooker.
Yet Franciabigio’s connection with Andrea del Sarto was the determining factor in his career.

Francesco di Cristofano, known as Franciabigio addressed the popular Renaissance motif of the "Madonna dell’Umiltà" in several paintings.
This explains why in 1805 the work in the Princely Collections was still thought to be by Raphael before Franciabigio’s monogram was discovered on the hem of Mary’s robe, permitting attribution to the Florentine painter.
Franciabigio had his own particular way of integrating Christ’s future suffering and death into his image: the Christ Child’s strangely unstable pose is explained by a dark fissure in the ground at his feet, a subtle allusion to his rocky tomb.
