 Parish of Taney
Francis Blackburne, sometime Lord Chancellor of Ireland, who maintained by a lengthened residence at Roebuck Hall the connection of Roebuck, begun in the thirteenth century, with the holders of the Great Seal.
Francis Vandeleur Westby, D.L. Soon after the Anglo-Norman Conquest the lands, which were originally of greater extent than at present became a manor with a chief residence, and at the beginning of the fourteenth century permission was given to the owner to keep game in his demesne on them.
The lands of Roebuck, or Rabo as they were anciently called, which lie between Donnybrook and Dundrum, were the site of a castle, which stood from very early times on the ground now occupied by the modern Roebuck Castle, the handsome seat of Mr.

 Parish of Rathfarnham
Francis Blackburne, sometime Lord Chancellor of Ireland, and still in the occupation of his descendants, is one of the few fine residences of any antiquity in the metropolitan county.
Rathfarnham Castle was dismantled by the Loftus family in the early part of the nineteenth century, and after having been occupied for a time by a family called Roper, under whom the demesne was used for dairy purposes, it was bought about the year 1852 by Lord Chancellor Blackburne.
It was originally a fortified and embattled structure built in the reign of Queen Elizabeth by that great legal ecclesiastic, Archbishop Loftus, but owing to alterations in the eighteenth century carried out in a Grecian style of architecture, it now presents the appearance of a modern house.

COLIN, BARON BLACKBURN - LoveToKnow Article on COLIN, BARON BLACKBURN
Blackburn himself is said to have thought that a county court judgeship was about to be offered him, which he had resolved to decline.
His progress was at first slow, and he employed himself in reporting and editing, with T. Ellis, eight volumes of the highly-esteemed Ellis and Blackburn reports.
He soon proved himself one of the soundest lawyers on the bench, and when he was promoted to the court of appeal in 1876 was considered the highest authority on common law.

Francis Blackburne (see Route III) died here in 1867.
A walk of about a mile brings us to Rathfarnham Castle, (pictured, left) or rather to the lofty entrance gate to its grounds; high walls conceal it on all sides from the village, but a fair view is to be obtained from a point a few hundred yards further on the Dublin road.

1938 was as 1937 except that the 150 ohv model had a Blackburne engine rather than a JAP, but this was to clear stock as the Blackburne factory had ceased production in 1937.
This dated back a further seven years to when Francis Willoughby Cotton first laid down his triangulated design that was still little changed in 1939.

GENUKI: Richmond Parish information from Bulmers' 1890.
In 1813, the Rev. Francis Blackburne sold the property to Lord Dundas, from whom it has descended to the earl of Zetland.
After passing through several hands, the hospital estate came into the possession of the Nortons in 1646, from whom it passed, by the marriage of an heiress, to Sir John Yorke, of Goulthwaite, by which family it was sold to the Blackburnes.
In 1841 the house underwent extensive repairs, and in digging the foundations of the out-offices near the north wing, a large quantity of human bones was discovered, and also a stone coffin, in which, besides the remains of the dead, was a small chalice, indicating the priestly character of the deceased.

Chapter XXXI:  The Unitarian Revolt from the Church of England
The feeling back of all these writings at length found its full expression in one of the most important books in the religious life of eighteenth century England, a book entitled The Confessional, published anonymously (1766) by the Rev. Francis Blackburne, Archdeacon of Cleveland.
It was some years before the movement took definite shape; but in 1771 Blackburne, who was recognized as the leader in the cause, was induced to draw up some proposals for an appeal to Parliament for relief from subscription to the liturgy and Articles, and these were widely circulated.
Meantime he married the Stepdaughter of Blackburne; but though he was offered a place in Ireland which would no doubt soon have led him to a bishopric, he declined the honor, and instead chose to go where the scenes and the people were dear to them both.

 About the project
Two particular gaps in Lindsey's correspondence are his letters to his father-in-law Archdeacon Francis Blackburne (1705-87), Rector of Richmond (Yorkshire) and a prominent latitudinarian; and to Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), perhaps Lindsey's closest theological and personal associate.
Letters from Blackburne and from Priestley to Lindsey survive in considerable numbers; Lindsey's letters to them remain (to date) undiscovered.
It may be expected that further information, especially with relation to letters which are privately owned, will emerge.

Meanwhile he had begun to entertain anti-Trinitarian views, and to be troubled in conscience about their inconsistency with the Anglican belief; since 1769 the intimate friendship of Joseph Priestley had served to foster his scruples, and in 1771 he united with Francis Blackburne, archdeacon of Cleveland (his father-in-law), John Jebb (1736-

Blackburne had also written an account of Johnsons relationship with Thomas Hollis in the same year.
The item by Blackburne is the third in the volume, but his tenuous association with Dr. Johnson propels it to first listing.
Though long devoted to enlightened principles as a consequence of his early absorption of Locke, Blackburne, Archdeacon of Cleveland, was not prepared for extension of full toleration to Catholics.

 About Theophilus Lindsey
He served as a point of contact for relations between many other significant figures, both Anglican and Dissenting, notably Francis Blackburne, William Frend, Christopher Wyvill, Joseph Priestley and Richard Price.
By his anti-trinitarian convictions and consequent resignation as Vicar of Catterick in 1773 he helped to further the emergence of Unitarianism as a separate denomination and made his chapel at Essex Street, off the Strand in central London, a focus both for theological and political radicalism.
Born at Middlewich, Cheshire, on 20 June 1723 (Old Style), Lindsey was educated at the free grammar school, Leeds, and at St John's College, Cambridge.

His knowledge of the arts was varied and extensive; in fact, if we were to look around for the model of an Irish gentleman we know none whom we should prefer to Francis Blackburne.
He died at his country seat, Rathfarnham Castle, surrounded by his immediate relatives; and with Francis Blackburne, with the exception of the ex-Chief Justice, has passed away the last of a race of lawyers and advocates unsurpassed by any bar in the world.
Blackburne conducted himself in the trials for offences under the Insurrection Act, in the first administration of the Marquis of Wellesley.

 Literature
Blackburne were losing at the ohc game, and their old outside-flywheel ohv engine was becoming dated for a buying public which now looked for refinements such as enclosed primary drive.
In 1936 an attempt was made to revive golden days of the twenties by offering a modernised version of the old 350cc Blackburne single.
As engines became more powerful and more stress was exerted on crude and flexible diamond frames, the instability and fragility of motorcycles threatened to scare off all but the toughest pioneers, and make the new form of transport extinct.

He would be very grateful for information regarding the whereabouts of Theophilus Lindsey's surviving letters, in particular the letters which were written to Theophilus Lindsey's father-in-law, Francis Blackburne, Archdeacon of Cleveland.
Theophilus Lindsey was married on 29 September 1760 to Hannah Elsworth, the step-daughter of Francis Blackburne, Archdeacon of Cleveland.
Through his mother's connections and his Cambridge acquaintances, he benefited from aristocratic patronage, serving as domestic chaplain to the Duke of Somerset and as tutor to the future Duke of Northumberland.
