Francis Cotes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Francis Cotes ( 20 May 1726- 16 July 1770) was an English painter, one of the pioneers of English pastel painting, and a founder member of the Royal Academy in 1768.
At the peak of his powers, Cotes was invited to become one of the first members of the Royal Academy, but died just two years later, aged 44, in Richmond upon Thames.
An admirer of the pastel drawings of Rosalba Carriera, Cotes concentrated on works in pastel and crayon (some of which became well-known as engravings), but later added oil painting to his repertoire.

The Rectors of St Peter's (1499-1656) - St Peter's Church, Nottingham, England on-line magazine
Cotes was a man of some learning: in 1628 he was appointed by the Town Council to interview Thomas Leeke for the post of headmaster of the Free School (now Nottingham High School); forty years later Leeke's son Samuel became rector of St Peter's.
George Cotes died in November 1640, part way through a course of sermons on Jeremiah 48:13 - this is recorded in the parish register, and may be the source of the supposed "longest sermon ever preached" which has been attributed to St Peter's in 1640.
Cotes also left a large library, valued at £80 after his death - much the most valuable part of his goods and chattels, but sadly we do not know what books he owned.

 Prestwold and it's church
No details are given for Cotes in the Doomsday Survey, but shortly afterwards a Poutrel, Lord of Cotes held lands in Prestwold and Wymeswold, part belonging to the monastery of St. Ebrulf in Normandy, the other part of the Lordship of de Prestwold, an ancient family.
As a monument to Richard Nele and his son Francis in Tugby church (1574) shows the coats of arms of de Prestwold and Poutrel on the pedestals this suggests that they were descended from the earlier owners of Prestwold.
Richard Poutrel of Hoton (a near relative) abducted the young Richard Poutrel of Prestwold by force from the custody of William de Gnipton of Cotes manor in 1269 but the sheriffs judgement is unclear.

 Cotes Francis
Successful and established, Cotes was among the founding members of the Royal Academy and he went on to become Director of the Society of Artists, at whose shows he had exhibited since 1760.
Cotes extended his working practice to incorporate oil painting, resulting in some successful works, such as the portrait of Taylor White (1753; National Maritime Museum, London).
By the 1770s he was referred to as the most fashionable portrait painter in London and to increase his output he employed Peter Toms, a drapery painter.

 Francis Joseph on Encyclopedia.com
In 1914 his nephew, the heir apparent, Francis Ferdinand, was assassinated, and his death was the spark that set off World War I. Francis Joseph died before the empire actually fell apart under the impact of military defeat, as it did under his successor, Charles I.
When Russian Pan-Slavism backed Serbia, particularly after the annexation of Bosnia and Hercegovina (1908), a situation was created that helped bring on World War I. Francis Joseph's private life was beset by the tragedies falling on his wife, Empress Elizabeth, his brother, Maximilian of Mexico, and his son, Archduke Rudolf.

Cotes helped found the Society of Artists and became its director in 1765.
In his last decade, Cotes began to paint more in oil, a medium less labor intensive and more profitable than pastel.
An early pastel portrait gained him recognition and even inspired a love poem, "Address to Celia's picture." By the 1760s, he had achieved wide-reaching success as the pre-eminent pastel painter in England.

 ART / 4 / 2DAY
About 1741 Francis Cotes was apprenticed to George Knapton, who taught him to paint in oil and to draw in crayon, at which he became very accomplished.
Cotes was one of its founder members, which his prominent signature on the tree trunk, 'F Cotes RA px', proudly announces.
Cotes' reputation was assured by the pastels he did in 1751 of the beautiful Gunning sisters, then idolized by society and the populace.

In 1773 he travelled to Italy with fellow artist Ozias Humphrey to study art in Rome and Parma, returning to London in 1775 to resume business, this time in Cavendish Square (in a house formerly owned by noted portraitist Francis Cotes).
Romney was invited to join the newly-formed Royal Academy but refused to resign from another artistic society, violating the Academy's exclusive membership rules.

George Glazer Gallery - William O'Brien, Irish Actor
Francis Cotes was a British painter and pastel artist at a time when pastel and crayon portraits became very popular.
In the mid 1750s, his style was influenced by the Swiss pastellist Jean Etienne Liotard, who was staying in London, and Cotes abandoned the Rococo style for one based on realism and naturalistic poses.
Another copy of this mezzotint is in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.

Cotes was a pastellist who turned to oil painting to enable him to execute larger-scale works.
Hawke is best known for his defeat of the French fleet in Quiberon Bay in November 1759 - an extremely hazardous action fought close in on a rocky coast, in the fading light of a November evening.
In 1765, he became a director of the Society of Artists, with whom he had exhibited since 1760, and became an important figure in the London art world.

MAM - Collection - Early European Art - Francis Cotes
Portraitist Francis Cotes was almost as renowned in 18th-century England as Sir Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough.
By the end of the 1750s, he moved from pastels to oils and by the 1760s, when this painting was completed, he was the most fashionable portrait painter in London, where he also helped establish the Royal Academy and the British Society of Artists.
Here, the delicate palette of pinks, creams, and rich green creates a shimmering and lively ensemble appropriately complimentary to the young girl playing with a handkerchief rabbit and looking calmly but measuringly out at the viewer.

USC Trojan Family Magazine - Winter 1998: Fisher Gallery: British Portraiture
Francis Cotes (1726-70) was a founding member of the Royal Academy, but an accidental poisoning killed him at the height of his powers.
Renowned as a pastel artist, Cotes achieved his mature style by transferring the best features of his pastels – delicate lines and skillfully blended colors – to his half-length oil portraits of gentlemen.
Interest in Cotes was renewed only in the 20th century, when the demand in America for British portraits rose.
