The subsidiary titles of the Duke of Sutherland are: Marquess of Stafford (created 1786), Earl Gower (1746), Earl of Ellesmere (1846), Viscount Trentham, of Trentham in the County of Stafford (1746), Viscount Brackley, of Brackley in the County of Northampton (1846), and Baron Gower, of Sittenham in the County of York (1703).
The title united with the ancient title of Earl of Sutherland after the first Duke and his wife, the holder of the Earldom, died, and the titles were inherited by the second Duke.
The title Duke of Sutherland, derived from Sutherland in Scotland, was created for George Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Marquess of Stafford, in 1833.

Whatever opulence Phillip acquired from the capture of the Havannah, certain it is, that, at the age of twenty-three, he there was made a Lieutenant into the Stirling-castle, on the 7th of June, 1761, by Sir George Pococke, an excellent judge of naval accomplishments.
But that no time might be lost, in case of a disappointment in these particulars, the ground near Point Sutherland was ordered immediately to be cleared, and preparations to be made for landing, under the direction of the Lieutenant Governor.

The 1st Earl of Ellesmere was a relative of the 3rd Duke of Bridgwater (Francis Egerton), known historically as "The Canal Duke" because of his creation of the canal system in and around Worsley.
It told of how the Grade-11 listed Gothic monument in Worsley, a memorial to Francis Egerton, the 1st Earl of Ellesmere, was on sale for £225,000.
