 Vietnam - UNDER FRENCH RULE
The 1873 storming of the citadel of Hanoi, led by French naval officer Francis Garnier, had the desired effect of forcing Tu Duc to sign a treaty with France in March 1874 that recognized France's "full and entire sovereignty" over Cochinchina, and opened the Red River to commerce.
In an attempt to secure Tonkin, Garnier was killed and his forces defeated in a battle with Vietnamese regulars and Black Flag forces.
While Garnier's defeat had led to a partial French withdrawal from Tonkin, Riviere's loss strengthened the resolve of the French government to establish a protectorate by military force.

Thomas Kyd Biography / Biography of Thomas Kyd Main Biography
Kyd's version of Garnier's play was highly esteemed by some early critics, but it lacks the excitement and energy which made The Spanish Tragedy such a potent influence on subsequent playwrights.
Thomas Kyd was the son of Francis Kyd, a scrivener, or professional scribe, of London.
Its exciting action culminates in a cleverly contrived scene in which the protagonist stages a "play" which turns out to be horrifyingly real: the "actors" use their swords in earnest, with the result that all principal characters--heroes and villains--are disposed of in a spectacularly bloody fashion.

Robert Gordon saw himself — perhaps with some justification — as a contemporary performer whose style was rooted in ‘50s music.
Robert Gordon’s reference points from the ‘50s were not the popular acts from the period but rather the proto-punk rockabillies such as Johnny Burnette, Billy Riley and Gene Vincent.

 BOOK REVIEW OF SPRING 2001
The expedition, which Osborne covers in colorful detail, was led by Ernest Doudart de Lagr¨¦e and his feisty second-in-command, Francis Garnier, and although doomed from the start-plagued by inadequate preparation, serious illness, and its members' seemingly endless penchant for squabbling-it began a series of attempts by various parties to find a way around the falls.
Osborne's considerable quest is to lead us through two millennia of exploration, discovery, livelihoods, war, and development that have marked the river's course.
Milton Osborne's book is a welcome addition on a subject that has been surprisingly neglected.

Mekong - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first systematic exploration began with the French Mekong Expedition led by Ernest Doudard de Lagrée and Francis Garnier, which ascended the river from its mouth to Yunnan between 1866 to 1868.
The first European to discover the Mekong was the Portuguese Antonio de Faria in 1540; a European map of 1563 depicts the river, although even by then little was known of the river upstream of the delta.
Their chief finding was that the Mekong had too many falls and rapids to ever be useful for navigation.

In the 1860s a French team, led by Ernest Doudard de Lagree and Francis Garnier, set off from the South China Sea.
In the late ’90s a Japanese team tried navigating down the Kham section in the Tibetan plateau, but the expedition was called off after they were robbed by bandits.
The French made it to China’s Yunnan province at the cost of de Lagree’s life.

 Francis Garnier - Open Encyclopedia
It was at his suggestion that the marquis de Chasseloup-Laubat determined to send a mission to explore the valley of the Mekong River, but as Garnier was not considered old enough to be put in command, the chief authority was entrusted to Captain Ernest Doudard de Lagrée.
The preparation of his narrative was interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War, and during the siege of Paris he served as principal staff officer to the admiral in command of the eighth sector.
After some time spent in France he returned to the East, and in 1862 he was appointed inspector of the natives in Cochin China, and entrusted with the administration of Cho-lon, a suburb of Saigon.
