§8. Watts-Dunton. III. Critical and Miscellaneous Prose. Vol. 14. The Victorian Age, Part Two. The Cambridge History of English and American Literature: An Encyclopedia in Eighteen Volumes. 1907–21
Watts-Dunton’s authority is conclusive, and he declares 4 that Borrow’s firsthand knowledge of gypsy life was superficial compared with Hindes Groome’s; yet Borrow made gypsies live in the English mind as neither Hindes Groome did in his absurdly named and ill-constructed Romany novel Kriegspiel, nor Watts-Dunton in Aylwin.
Nor were Watts-Dunton’s gifts limited to criticism: he had the gift of poetry and the gift of the romancer; and he put both at the service of the gypsies whom he had studied for many years—the first in The Coming of Love and the second in Aylwin.
It was Borrow who first gave gypsies a citizenship in literature, though his knowledge of them, as of many other things, seems to have been wide and general rather than exact.

GROOME, FRANCIS HINDES, Kriegspiel: The War-Game.
Groome (1847-1912) spent much of his younger life traveling with Gypsies and later married an English Gypsy.
He made important contributions to Romany scholarship, including this novel of Gypsy life, which Sutherland in his Victorian Fiction characterizes as "unusual and interesting." On the front paste-down is a bookplate which Groome has signed for the owner and dated Edinburgh, May 5, 1900.
¶ A Romany novel based on Groome's extensive experiences and interest in English Gypsies.

 Cool book
Francis Hindes Groome, "that perfect scholar-gypsy and gypsy-scholar," wrote:- "The meagreness of his knowledge of the Anglo-Gypsy dialect came out in his Word Book of the Romany (1874); there must have been over a dozen Englishmen who have known it far better than he.
For his Spanish-Gypsy vocabulary in The Zincali he certainly drew largely either on Richard Bright's Travels through Lower Hungary or on Bright's Spanish authority, whatever that may have been.

Gypsy Stories & Lore & History - Story-Lovers SOS Story Lists
In 1899 Francis Hindes Groome included it in his collection Gypsy Folk-Tales with the claim that it was probably the most original work
Groome writes in his introduction, "They were collected by rofessor Leo Kirilowicz, of Czernowicz, but when, where, or from whom is not told." Let me know if you're not able to locate this book.
For example, he points out that the somersault that precedes a transformation in Gypsy tales has no known parallel in non-Gypsy folklore.

 Special Collections
In 1901 the Athenæum acquired over 300 printed books, manuscripts and notebooks belonging to Francis Hindes Groome, an eminent scholar of Gypsy life and culture.
There are also Groome's own books with his marginal notations, over thirty volumes of manuscript notes and lectures, and his correspondence with Paul Bataillard, the French student of Gypsy life.
His instincts as a historian led him to see the need for preserving the products of the Confederate press, and he embarked on a journey through the South, buying as rapidly and astutely as he could.

The book is thought to date at least from the reign of the Roman emperor Hadrian, or about the first century A.D., although other sources place it a bit earlier, between the fourth and second centuries B.C. Apparently unsubstantiated mention is made of its pre-existence in Chaldean as a Babylonian tale,

Perhaps Francis Bacon, relying no doubt on popular tradition, came nearest the truth when he stated that Empson had very rude manners.

 AYLWIN LAND
Well, fortunately no such misadventure happened for Watts-Dunton, and so he came unchallenged into his kingdom, a kingdom where his eminence is all the more marked because of pioneers such as George Borrow, Francis Hindes Groome, and Godfrey Leland.
Would the author have still published the cherished work of his maturity, or--as I have an impression, possibly a wrong impression, that I have read in some interview or personal article--would he have refrained from entering into the lists with any competitor?
