Francis Hutcheson was the first in a line of Scottish philosophers that would eventually include David Hume (1711-76), Adam Smith (1723-90) and Thomas Reid (1730-96).
Hutcheson greatly disapproved of Hume\'s views on morality, and he allegedly used his influence to thwart Hume from gaining appointment to the chair of moral philosophy at the University of Edinburgh in 1744-45.
Hutcheson was troubled by the implications of the hard-line Calvinists in the Scottish Presbytery and by those of Thomas Hobbes’s Leviathan (1651).
