Science and the plow - Roots of the experimental method
It is unfortunate that in more recent times, empiricism more formally stated by the likes of John Locke and Francis Bacon in the seventeenth century, created its own set of constraints but that's another story.
As an alternative to the Church-endorsed dogmatic approach to scientific practice in the middle ages, the empirical method was a breath of fresh air.
As such, it was a healthy alternative to the fusty approach inherited from the Greek philosophers that basically precluded any challenge to how the world was perceived.

 Aesthetics - Hutcheson
Hutcheson's philosophy was based on the empiricist thinking of John Locke, from whom he got the notion that all of our ideas come from experience.
Francis Hutcheson (1694-1746) helped move aesthetics from theories about Beauty and Harmony, as characteristics of the world, to theories about the experience of the viewer.
Hutcheson distinguished between absolute Beauty, the kind of beauty to be found in nature, and relative Beauty, the beauty that characterizes art.

 Francis Marion: The Swamp Fox
Parson Weems (Mason Locke Weems, 1759-1825), in an honest effort to teach a high patriotism, nobility, and morality, sometimes embellished or exaggerated his stories to the point of falsehood, as with his invention of the cherry tree anecdote in his Life of Washington.
It is not that there was no such man -- indeed there was, and other accounts indicate that Francis Marion is as deserving of praise as this account would indicate -- or moreso.
It seems strange that such a devotion to moral teaching should use falsehoods to reach its audience, but he apparently felt the means justified by the end.
