Henrietta was a beauty who was the model for Francis Bacon's "Lying Figure with Hypodermic Syringe" (1963) and, in her last years, for some arresting studies by Maggie Hambling.
Moraes claimed to have read the classics of Russian literature by the time he was 10; he was 12 when he began writing poetry, and when he wrote his first book, Green Is the Grass (1951), about cricket.
Dom Moraes's marriage to Henrietta Bowler was dissolved.

 Spectator, The: Dying moments
Henrietta Moraes is best known as the model for some of Francis Bacon's most celebrated paintings, including `Lying Figure with Hypodermic Syringe' (1963), based on photographs of her naked taken by John Deakin.
Her images of Moraes fall into two groups - over two dozen charcoal drawings from the life and on her deathbed; and a varied series of paintings, works on paper and sculpture made since then.
At the Money Gallery are portraits of her nonegenarian father up to his death in 1998, and at Marlborough Fine Art are paintings, drawings and sculptures of Henrietta Moraes, begun in May 1998 and continuing to her death in January 1999, with subsequent works from memory up to this year.

Among Freud's other models was Henrietta Moraes, the self-proclaimed queen of Soho, and a notorious drinker.
The painter's recurrent sitters from the 1960s onwards were close personal friends or lovers, among them the painters, Lucian Freud and Isabel Rawsthorne, drinking companions Henrietta Moraes and Muriel Belcher, and East Enders George Dyer and John Edwards.
A GAMBLER and a heavy drinker, Francis Bacon found plenty to capture his imagination in the ragtag collection of writers, artists, scammers and chancers he met in the bars and clubs of Soho.

The Daily Star Web Edition Vol. 5 Num 2
Dom Moraes was born at the fag end of the Raj, in 1938-- 19th July, to be precise--as Dominic Francis Moraes, the only child of Frank and Beryl Moraes.
Dom Moraes has not lacked for critics, who argue that he is a recherché figure, once promising but ultimately a performer--a fine performer, one has to admit--in a minor key.
It is no doubt a delicious irony that Moraes, who once believed he was English and has always written with an English accent, so to speak, should eventually find his literary niche in the context of the Indian subcontinent.

The episode of the four French ladies shows an intimate acquaintance with the court of Francis I., where Moraes spent some years, and one of these ladies named Torsi is the one he loved and to whom he addressed some verses entitled Desculpa de huns amores.
We know very little of his life, except that he was treasurer of the household to King John III., and he is first found in Paris in the suite of the Portuguese ambassador, D. Francisco de Noronha, who had gone there in 1540.
The Pal mei rim delnglaterra belongs to another branch of the same cycle as the Amadis de Gaula; the two romances are the best representatives of their class, and for their merits were spared from the auto daft to which Cervantes condemned other romances of chivalry in D. Quixote.

t first, there seems to be no trace of a smile in Francis Bacon's ''Study of Henrietta Moraes Laughing'' (1969), one of many portraits of Moraes that Bacon (1909-92) painted over the years.
All one sees is a distorted face with eyelids closed over deep-set eyes, the face in shades of white, ocher and black, overlaid in patches with marks in red and magenta like bloody fingerprints.
Most of these approaches appear violent, involving painterly renditions of flayed skin; cheekbones, jaws and necks defined by savage brushstrokes; hollowed eye sockets; torn ears; extreme dislocation of features, all in a riot of spurting colors, except for one constant: the portraits' solid background.

Between these two giants, on the entrance wall itself, is the subdued triptych "Three Studies for a Portrait of Henrietta Moraes" (1976-78), by Francis Bacon.
The entrance wall to the "Paintings and Sculptures" half of the exhibit is flanked by two large abstract compositions heavily encrusted with globs, drips, and other painterly gestures—archetypal images that characterize "modern art" (even though they were done in different time periods by different artists).
This first impression of the show sums up the exhibition's underlying message: despite the personalities, the politics, and the public's disillusionment with the art world, artists in the 20th century have done some pretty good work.

Francis Bacon: Anatomy of an Enigma
Particularly hilarious is Henrietta Moraes' account of the origin of her famous nude photographs, many of which formed the basis for Bacon's most memorable female nudes.
Unsurprising for a Baconian character, the photographer - George Deakin - having persuaded Henrietta to pose with her legs a little further apart than necessary for the particular needs of art, was caught attempting to sell her nude images to sailors in 1950s Soho.
This and other splendidly sleazy stories transform what would otherwise be a bleak or pretentious subject matter into a tour de force of black humour that Samuel Beckett would be proud of.

Francis Bacon and In the Bag - British Council Scotland
The exhibition comprises some fifty works, including self-portraits and portraits of friends, lovers and other artists.  Sitters include Lucian Freud, Henrietta Moraes, Isabel Rawsthorne, Peter Lacy and George Dyer.  Many of the intimate and striking portraits were painted from photographs, and the exhibition illustrates Bacon’s abiding preoccupation with the intensity of his human relationships.
Francis Bacon: Portraits and Heads is a new exhibition exploring in depth the artist’s intense and forceful portraiture.  Jointly conceived and organised by the British Council and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, it opens on 4 June and is the major summer show at this year’s Edinburgh International Festival.
The works are assembled from loans from private individuals and from many public collections, among them the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Nationalgalerie, Berlin; the Hamburg Kunsthalle; Tate Gallery, London; and the Thyssen Collection, Madrid.

Before long the decorating took second place to the anecdotes, as Richardson sat in fascinated thrall to Avery's rich fund of anecdotes of his life in and around the post-war Soho demi-monde that included Daniel Farson, William Empson, George Barker, Henrietta Moraes, John Minton - and, most notably, Francis Bacon.
Nigel Richardson first met Josh Avery when he was a boy, but it was only much later, when he hired him to decorate his house in Hampshire, that he got to know him well.
Richardson was never quite sure if the stories were true or not - and the obituaries when Josh died made the same point, while revealing tantalising glimpses of stories still untold.
