Sir Francis Richards, KCMG, CVO (born 1945), was appointed Her Majesty's Governor and Commander-in-Chief of Gibraltar in 2003.
After Sir Francis' army career was cut short by injury, he entered the Diplomatic Service, serving in Moscow, Vienna, New Delhi and Namibia and holding a number of senior posts at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, Sir Francis was commissioned into the Royal Green Jackets, serving with the United Nations Force in Cyprus.

FRANCIS HENRY RICHARDS, mechanician, engineer and inventor of Hartford and New York City, with residence in the former city, is a native of the town of New Hartford, Litchfield county, Conn., a county from which have gone out into the world many men who have achieved distinction and fame.
Richards is the son of Henry and Maria (Whiting) Richards, and is of noble lineage.
On his father's side he is a descendant in the ninth generation from (1) Thomas Richards, who was at Hartford in about 1637, and whose name is given in the Memorial History of Hartford County, edited by the late Dr. Trumbull, as one of the original proprietors of Hartford in 1639.

Like his contemporary Francis Hayman, Richards worked as a scene painter in London's theatres (1777-1803).
John Inigo Richards (1731 - 1810) was an English landscape painter who became one of the founding members of the Royal Academy in 1768, and was secretary to the Academy from 1788 until his death.
He retained a life-long interest in theatre design and is credited with the 1792 design of Philadelphia's Chestnut Street Theatre (America's first purpose-built professional theatre), which it is said he based on London's Covent Garden Theatre (the original building on a site today occupied by the Royal Opera House).
