Francis Seymour Haden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Haden attended no art school and had no art teachers, but between 1845 and 1848 he studied portfolios of prints belonging to a second-hand dealer named Love, who had a shop in Bunhill Row, the old Quaker quarter of London.
During later years Haden began to practise the sister art of mezzotint engraving, with a measure of the same success that he had already achieved in pure etching and in dry-point.
Notwithstanding his study of the old masters of his art, Haden's own plates were very individual, and are particularly noticeable for a fine original treatment of landscape subjects, free and open in line, clear and well divided in mass, and full of a noble and dignified style of his own.

Haden, a dedicated artist but a surgeon by profession, and, incidentially, Whistler's brother-in-law, was probably the first artist to sign his prints on a regular basis, a practice he started in the 1880s.
It is recorded that Haden often signed prints retrospectively, and in batches, at the request of collectors.
Initially, artist did not consistently sign their prints, as can be seen in this example by Haden.

A chapter on Haden's life and art precedes the catalogue and helps to correct some popularly held misconceptions about this remarkable man. Dr Schneiderman's new catalogue lists every print in every known state.
