 District of Porto da Barra
In Porto of Barra, the first donee of the Captaincy of Bahia, Francisco Pereira Coutinho, disembarked, in 1535, and Captain Tomé de Souza founded Salvador in 1549.
With the shape of a small bay, the port was chosen by donee Francisco Pereira Coutinho to found the Villa of the Captaincy of Bahia.
Known as Pereira’s Villa, it received the ships that made trade with the native commanded by Diogo Álvares “Caramuru” in the first half f the 16th century.

The Santo Antonio Fort, best known as The Lighthouse was built in 1627 by the Governor of the province, Francisco Nunes Marinho in an area originally called Ponta do Padrão.
Francisco Pereira had his ship sunk near the Island of Itaparica and died beheld by the natives of the island; Caramuru, also aboard the ship, was saved once more thanks to his relationship with the natives and his reputation for holding magic powers.
On the south, there is a memorial built at the celebration of the 400th anniversary of the city's foundation (1549); this also indicates the first disembarking point of the colonizers that came with Tomé de Souza in March 29th,1549.

 A Short History of Salvador da Bahia, Brazil
One of those who failed was the captain of Bahia, Francisco Pereira Coutinho, who arrived in 1536 and founded a village -- Vila Bahia -- on the site where the fort São Diogo and the church of Santo Antônio da Barra now stand.
Both the fort and the church are readily visible from the beach at Porto da Barra.
In the year 1537, a year after his arrival, Captain Coutinho -- the man whose word was law -- was on a boat which went down on the reefs off the southern end of the island of Itaparica.
