Francisco Baltazar, better known by his pen name Balagtas, is the acknowledged “Prince of Tagalog Poets.” His masterpiece is the popular Florante at Laura.
He was born in the barrio of Panginay, Bigaa, Bulacan on April 2, 1788 to Juan Balagtas and Juana de la Cruz.
He was later appointed lieutenant of the town and in 1856, he was appointed translator of the court.

Francisco Balagtas (April 2, 1788—February 20, 1862), christened Francisco Baltazar, was a prominent Filipino poet, and is widely considered as the Tagalog equivalent of William Shakespeare for his impact on Filipino literature.
Born in the town of Bigaa (now named Balagtas in his honor) in the province of Bulacan, Francisco Balagtas was the youngest of four children.
His parents were the flsmith, Juan Baltazar, and his wife, Juana dela Cruz.

The art of publicly arguing in extemporaneous, metered and rhymed poetry is called Balagtasan, named after Francisco Balagtas (the name by which Francisco Baltazar was popularly known).
This performance, a cross between drama and the indigenous oral tradition of poetry, is a dying art in the Philippines now.
