The son of a Portuguese merchant and landowner, Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves graduated from the Faculty of Law in São Paulo (1870).
Rodrigues Alves resigned his seat in the Senate to join the cabinet of Prudente de Morais as finance minister (15 Nov 1894 - 20 Nov 1896) and then returned to the Senate (1897-1900).
However, Rodrigues Alves was unable to take the oath of office as he contracted the "Spanish" influenza and on 15 Nov 1818 vice president Delfim Moreira assumed the presidency.

In 1902 Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves becomes president, succeeded by Afonso Augusto Moreira Pena.
He is confirmed in the 1969 elections and is succeeded in 1974 by Ernesto Geisel and in 1979 João Baptista de Oliveira Figuerido.

Presidents Prudente de Moraes Barros (1894-1898), Manuel Ferraz de Campos Sales (1898-1902) and Francisco de Paula Rodrigues Alves (1902-1906) were all Paulista Republicans; from then onward Republicans from Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais alternated in office.
Floriano was succeeded in 1894 by an elected successor, Prudente de Moraes Barrios.
The election of Hermes de Fonseca in 1910 brought political stability to an end; anti-Fonseca coups in several provinces of the north, political unrest in Ceara and the Contestado conflict in area disputed by Parana and Santa Catarina followed.

In 1555 the French (mostly French Hugguenots, ie Protestant Calvanists) arrive in force at Rio de Janeiro and establish a fort on a small island on the island still known as Villegaignon, in honor of the commander.
The navy, led by Admirai Custodio José de Mello (1845?-1902), became frightened; in September 1893, the entire navy mutinied under Mello's direction against the Peixoto government and took control of the harbor of Rio de Janeiro, the capital.
José Bonifácio de Andrada e Silva (1763—1838) was elected president of the São Paulo provisional junta and was named chief of the first “Brazilian” cabinet.
