Franciscus Gomarus (January 30, 1563, Bruges - January 11, 1641), was a Dutch theologian, a strict Calvinist and opponent of the teaching of James Arminius (and his followers) which was formally judged at the Synod of Dordrecht (1618-1619).
Gomarus immediately set himself earnestly to oppose these views in his classes at college, and was supported by Johann B. Bogermann (1570-1637), who afterwards became professor of theology at Franeker.

 Arminianism
The original Arminian party arose within the Reformed churches in the Netherlands, to advocate a revision of the Reformed doctrine of predestination, in favor of an idea of predestination that was more agreeable to reason and Catholic tradition.
They charged that the Calvinist party, especially the followers of Theodore Beza and the University of Leiden professor, Franciscus Gomarus[?], had developed a system of doctrine that made God the author of evil as well as of good.
The Calvinists responded to the Arminian position at the Synod of Dordt, with a rebuttal against the charge that Reformed churches relieve people of responsibility for their own sin, or teach that God is the author of evil.

Controversy did not erupt, however, until Arminius was appointed professor of theology at Leiden when his views clashed with those of Franciscus Gomarus, not only a strict Calvinist but a supralapsarian (supralapsarianism is the doctrine that God decreed both election and reprobation before the fall of Adam).
Gomarus predicted that the debate might even erupt into a civil war.

Initially there were objections from his contemporaries who were increasingly unsettled by Arminius' views, but the issue was resolved when it was agreed by all parties to have Franciscus Gomarus interview and evaluate him; Gomarus felt satisfied with Arminius' orthodoxy and he was installed as professor of theology, succeeding Franz Junius.
These sermons were in their own right a source of controversy, which he was never to escape, between himself and his Calvinist contemporaries who were opposed to his views on the doctrines of grace and predestination.
In 1592 a colleague (Petrus Plancius?) formally accused Arminius of the heresy of Pelagianism, deviance from the Belgic Confession and Heidelberg Catechism, and erroneous views on predestination (an accusation which was not systematically raised until he was professor of theology at Leiden, his principal opponent being Gomarus).

In the Netherlands, theological controversy raged from 1603 to 1618 between disciples of Jacob Arminius, a Leiden theology professor who maintained that individuals who possessed saving grace could subsequently lose it, and followers of William Perkins and Franciscus Gomarus, who maintained that God extended his saving grace permanently and irresistibly to those predestined to salvation.
An international synod held at Dordrecht (or Dort) in 1618-1619 decided the controversy in favour of the latter position.
