Thus Francistown presents the paradox of an established, fully-fledged structure of urbanism, to which its many recently immigrated inhabitants are yet adjusting as a new thing.
The basis for the application of this method was established during a year of fieldwork in Francistown (1998--99) and followed by shorter visits, once or twice yearly, that renewed and adapted urban and urban-rural networks of relationships and communication (which included our protagonist but were by no means restricted to her).

Francistown has the familiar Southern African ‘township’ appearance only too well known from world-wide television broadcasting on the South African revolution: rows and rows of tiny, sink-covered houses at ground level, each standing in its own tiny plot, serviced by dusty, often unpaved roads.
For as long as Francistown was racially segregated, it was impossible for Africans to live east and north of the Tati River, with the exception of the Monarch peninsula adjacent to Monarch Mine.

Early in 1995, Pat Nurse organised the first meeting of the Francistown Branch of BirdLife Botswana, and for the next five years she was the driving force behind what was then known simply as the Francistown Bird Club.
One of their main contributions was organising an extensive bird survey along the banks of the Tati River north of Francistown that will be flooded when the Ntimbale Dam is built.
