Franciszek Kostrzewski is among the first Polish comics artists that emerged from the satirical magazines Tygodnik Ilstrowany and Klosy.
Among those first artists, Kostrzewski stood out for his recognizable characters and satirical representation of the Polish "fin de siècle" sentiments of the late 19th century.
His career ran for about 50 years, paving the way for new generations of Polish comics artists.

In Kielce he studied painting for one year under visiting Warsaw artist Franciszek Kostrzewski [1826—1911].
Szermentowski first copied the 17th-century Dutch paintings in Zielinski’s gallery; subsequently Zielinski arranged for him to study in Warsaw, where he trained (1853—7) at the School of Fine Arts under Chrystian Breslauer [1802—1882] and, in 1858, in the studio of Wojciech Gerson.
Szermentowski made friends with members of the Cyganerii (Bohemia) group of Polish artists, who specialized in genre scenes and landscapes and were dedicated to close observation of both popular life and nature.

 National Museum in Warsaw
A set of Henryk Rodakowski's paintings exemplifies the utmost achievements in the portraiture of the period.
The beginnings of realism may be traced in Marcin Zaleski's townscapes and interiors, Franciszek Kostrzewski's genre scenes and Jozef Szermentowski's pictures deriving from the tradition of French painting (Annex 4).
History painting, a dominant trend in 19th-century Polish art, is represented by Jan Matejko's monumental works with the Battle of Grunwald and Wojciech Gerson's paintings (Room VI).
