The discord between Branicki and the king grew, with the latter determined to considerably limit the authority enjoyed by the hetman.
The article is based primarily on Russian, Prussian, Austrian, Saxon, French and Polish diplomatic correspondence, the scarce preserved correspondence of F. Branicki and I. Potocki, the correspondence of Stanisław August with Branicki’s sister, Elzbieta Sapieżyna, and the conversations registered by the king and held by him with Stacklelberg and Branicki.

From 1774 in particular Branicki enjoyed the protection and friendship of Grigoriy Potemkin, an influential favourite of Catherine II, thanks to whom he increased the prerogatives of his office and who granted Branicki independence from the king as well as a conviction about the possibility of playing a great political role in Poland.

Ignacy, Rafal and Franciszek obtained the hereditary title of Count of the Galicia from Emperor Francis II on the 30th March 1798.
Franciszek (son of Boleslaw by his wife Maria Bronikowska) obtained the hereditary title of Count from Kaiser Frederich-Wilhelm III on 30th June 1803.
