Corelli often attacked a high note from below; he was not always a paragon of style; and, during his later years, the conductor had two choices: either indulging the tenor in everything (as does Alberto Ventura on this tape) or lay down his baton.
When he disappeared after his Verona performances in 1975 to emerge only for two last Bohèmes one year later, there was (and there still is) talk of a singer who couldn’t stand the heat any more, whose nerves had melted down and who disappeared at the height of his career.
Loretta Di Lelio recorded every performance of her husband and Corelli clearly knew that his voice was going down the drain.

With his death one of the last great tenors of the 20th century is gone, a tenor that to many was the sole reason for their love of opera.
It was a fresh delivery to the opera scene in Italy early 1950s, where he on many occasions partnered Maria Callas, founding the legacy of the popular claim "the best tenor ever." He had an exemplary breath control that allowed him to fully dominate diminuendi and pianissimo singing.

Opera on the Internet - Franco Corelli
Possibly some of the keenest commentary on Corelli that I've yet read is Paul Jackson's in his second volume on the MET b'casts: he spotlights this mercurial aspect to Corelli's singing right away.
Beyond this, Corelli may be unique (even though some very murky cylinders of De Reszke suggest Corelli may not be alone in this) in the astonishing capacity to combine the heroic and the amorous within one and the same phrase through veritably heightening the sweetness of his tone even as he swells it.
For a few, this predominantly tender quality that Corelli sustains even at his most clarion marks him as the greatest tenor of all, for others it ends up as a handicap, making his singing a bit cloying.

Obituary: Franco Corelli | Special reports | Guardian Unlimited
One of the most exciting tenors of the 20th century, Franco Corelli, who has died aged 82, had a voice that was as handsome as his appearance.
He sang with great style, as the recordings he made in the 1950s and 1960s, when he was in his prime, confirm.
Corelli encompassed most of the major roles in Italian and French suitable for his dramatic tenor.

Corelli’s trademark mastery of the long line and dynamic shading is very much in evidence, perhaps most notably in the stunning “Cielo e mar!” from the 1966 performance.
Corelli may also be heard as Don Carlo in a 1970 performance from Vienna, available on several labels, including the budget Opera D’Oro.

Opera on the Internet - Franco Corelli 2
I sense that Corelli, consciously or not, either became too over-manipulative on the one hand or too sloppy on the other as a result of having attained the kind of astounding technical control he displayed throughout the '62/63 season.
Corelli may have been aware of this himself, because for the Scala opening night of '64/65, a Turandot with Nilsson, there is an abrupt, obviously deliberate, adoption of a far more simpatico, relaxed style--and the phrasing just goes on forever.
His Forza broadcast from the Met with Tucci, the Met Ernani b'cast, the newly released SRO Forza with Farrell from Philly, his EMI Turandot all testify to a consistency of musicality and technical control during the '64/65 season fully the equal of the '62/63.
