Delsarte proposed that non-verbal communication, that is gesture, facial expression, and body position, could be recorded and taught as something of a universal language.
Delsarte died in 1841, but his Method lived on well into the era of silent film and beyond, until the Stanislavski Method of Acting formally replaced it in the late 1930's.
The most common vehicle for Delsarte's method was the melodrama, and as an example the packet included a picture of Lon Chaney in one of the most famous poses ever depicted from the silent film era, as the 1925 Phantom of the Opera.

Delsarte was interested in enhancing performance through pose and gesture, governed by natural laws of the body and its movement.
The Delsarte method developed control, grace, poise and carriage, not for their own sake, but in order to enhance physical expression of emotions in connection with speech and thought.
It appears in their shared philosophical tenets of perfection and control of the body; the idea of integrating mind, body and spirit; the importance of the natural; and even in the Greek robes or togas that were so ubiquitous in the period.
