The Adams operations in K-theory are derived from the exterior powers, and are now widely widely used in purely algebraic contexts.
The Adams conjecture on the J-homomorphism is related to the homotopy groups of spheres.

A member of the GEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF CANADA 1880-89, Logan Professor of Geology at McGill 1892-1922, dean of applied science at McGill 1905-19, and acting principal and VP there 1919-22, Adams was Canada's most eminent geologist of the first half of the 20th century.
His experimental work on the flow of brittle rocks proved as revolutionary in geology as the work in physics of his colleague Ernest RUTHERFORD, establishing him as the founder of modern structural geology.

Frank Adams, a deputy sheriff for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, was shot and killed instantly October 7, 1901, while attempting to arrest a man who had interfered with him in the discharge of his duty.The shooting occurred after two drunken men started fighting near Jackson Square in Key West.
Deputy Adams, who was sitting near the corner of Southard and Thomas Streets, arrested the man. He attempted to take him to jail, but the man resisted and Deputy Adams called out for assistance.
At the preliminary hearing Robert Frank admitted to the shooting and said that he was sorry for it.

I have begun to believe that the Bedford County Adams are not neccessarily connected to the John Adams of Maryland...still can be, but it seems the Robert Adams I thought may be brother to Elijah may not be a brother.
But worse than that I was contacted by a descendent of Elijah Adams and Hannah Blair who says this Elijah (mine) is not the son of Elijah and Hannah in Bedford County....that this Elijah (son of old Elijah) was still in Bedford County in 1836.
