Frank Alvin Gotch was born on April 27, 1878 on a farm near Humboldt, Iowa.
Gotch accepted the dare, and they wrestled for nearly 2 hours, with the 21-year old Gotch pushing the seasoned champion to the limits of his ability before McLeod finally pulled out the victory.
However, Gotch was angry at Hack for starting the dirty rumors, and he thus shot on Hack in the second fall to claim the sweep.

Frank Alvin Gotch (April 27, 1878 - December 17, 1917) was an American professional wrestler back when the contests were real (see catch wrestling).
The son of Frederick Rudolph and Amelia Gotch, Gotch was born and raised on a small farm three miles south of Humboldt, Iowa.
Gotch continued to win until April 1, 1913, where he was beaten by Estonian wrestler Georg Lurich in Kansas City.

Few men garnered the respect Gotch earned during his time as champion, and for many years afterward, every champion that followed him was invariably compared to the great Gotch, the "measuring stick" of that era.

Gotch stunned the sporting world with an upset in what Chicago Tribune writer George Siler described as "the most desperate mat battle in the history of wrestling."(29) The best two of three fails, catch-as-catch-can style match lasted for over two hours before Gotch slammed Hackenschmidt to the mat, forcing him into an eventual submission.
One writer in Gotch's hometown penned the following panegyric: "From the remotest corners of Iowa--and from the vastness of the Dakotas, stalwart sons of the open prairie make their pilgrimages to witness the work of their idol--for in no small measure, Frank Gotch is a deity."(39)
Gotch's pleasant--though sometimes rough--manner of meeting these foreign invaders and picking them up and slamming them around like sacks of grain and finally pinning their foreign shoulders to the mat, having toyed with them to his heart's content--perhaps that's what really has endured the husky Iowan to the followers of the wrestling game.

His parents were married in their native Germany in 1855 and immigrated to the United States in 1863.
Frederick enlisted in the Union Army, Company A, 186th New York Volunteer Infantry, in 1864, and served under General Ulysses Grant in the Army of the Potomac.
Frederick Gotch saw action in several battles, including the capture of Petersburg, but escaped serious injury and was mustered out in 1865.
