Frank Bridge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Frank Bridge (February 26, 1879 – January 10, 1941) was an English composer.
Bridge was born in Brighton and studied at the Royal College of Music in London from 1899 to 1903 under Charles Villiers Stanford and others.
One of his most characterictic harmonies is the Bridge chord, for instance C minor and D major sounding at the same time, very poignant in There Is a Willow Grows Aslant a Brook and the piano sonata (1922-5).

FRANK BRIDGE (1879-1941) COMPOSER, COURAGEOUS REVOLUTIONARY AND PACIFIST: Chapter 2   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Frank Bridge was 37 when the war began, and his enchanted world of pastoral beauty continued into his concert works, living in the shimmering countryside visions of Summer and the Edward Thomas/Ivor Gurney accented idylls of the Two Jefferies Poems.
Bridge was shaken and transformed by the trauma of the war and quite probably by an unreasoning guilt associated with the loss of many of his pupils, including Ernest Bristow Farrar (the dedicatee of the piano sonata).
Bridge's Third String Quartet (1926) is reckoned to be the first work in which he approached the Second Viennese School style with utter commitment; not that there is any suggestion that this was a question of aping a school he admired.

Frank Bridge (February 26, 1879 – January 10, 1941) was an English (An Indo-European language belonging to the West Germanic branch; the official language of Britain and the United States and most of the Commonwealth countries) composer (Someone who composes music as a profession).
Among Bridge's works are the orchestral The Sea (1911), Oration (1930) for cello and orchestra and the opera The Christmas Rose (premiered 1932), but he is perhaps most highly regarded today for his chamber music (Serious music performed by a small group of musicians).
His early works are in a late-Romantic (A soulful or amorous idealist) idiom, but later pieces such as the third (1926) and fourth (1937) string quartets are harmonically advanced and very distinctive, showing the influence of the Second Viennese School (additional info and facts about Second Viennese School).

Frank Bridge, English composer - a short biography
Frank Bridge was born in Brighton in 1879, a younger child in a large family.
Bridge was a thorough craftsman whose skill as a composer was finely sharpened by the depth of his practical musicianship.
While Bridge felt hurt and underappreciated not to obtain a permanent conducting post, this failure was attributable in part to an exacting though at times tactless manner with musicians.

The strings vibrate and the bridge transfers their energy to the head, causing it to vibrate and amplify the sound.

 Frank Bridge
The name Frank Bridge is probably best known to music lovers as being part of the title of a work by one of Britain’s most illustrious composers, Sir Benjamin Britten.
Bridge won four Cobbett Prizes for the Phantasie String Quartet (1910), the Phantasie Piano Trio (1908), the Phantasie Piano Quartet (1910), as well as the Second String Quartet (1915) which was not especially written for the occasion but was nearing completion when the competition was announced.
Bridge remains, despite recent efforts by contemporary British performers, one of Britain’s best kept musical secrets: the least known composer of the generation that included Vaughn Williams, Holst, Bax, and Ireland.

 Frank Bridge, 1879-1941
Born in Sussex, Bridge as a boy learned to play violin from his father, and had much early exposure to practical musicianship, playing in theatre orchestras his father conducted, arranging and also conducting occasionally.
Today, his music enjoys an ever-growing audience, largely due to the efforts of the Frank Bridge Trust, which began to subsidize recordings as early as the 1960s.
Ironically, Bridge's music has reached far more people since his death than during his own lifetime, through that peculiar 'virtual concert hall' made possible by postwar advances in the quality of sound-recording.
