Frank L Culbertson Jr is a former NASA astronaut and a retired captain in the United States Navy.
Culbertson graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1971 and served aboard the USS Fox (CG-33) in the Gulf of Tonkin prior to reporting to flight training in Pensacola, Florida.
Culbertson then served as the Catapult and Arresting Gear Officer for the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) until May 1981 when he was selected to attend the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, Maryland.

Several tons of equipment, food and supplies for the new station crew of Frank Culbertson, Vladimir Dezhurov and Mikhail Tyurin were moved to the station, while the two Expedition crews began extensive discussions of operations, enabling the new residents to familiarize themselves with station systems and life on board the ISS.
Culbertson set up and served as the first test subject for the experiment this week, which involves ingesting pills that contain either the active compound or a placebo in an effort to determine the value of the countermeasure on a small population.
