Director Frank Darabont's second adaptation of a Stephen King prison tale (the first being 1994's nearly flawless THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) is a hopeful charmer with a hint of the supernatural.
In writer-director Frank Darabont's The Shawshank Redemption, Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) is sentenced to two consecutive life terms in prison for the murders of his wife and her lover in the late 1940s.

Directors: Frank Darabont   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Darabont has directed no less than three King pieces, including a short that was broadcast on PBS in 1983, and which also focused on someone incarcerated—in this case a dying woman.
Darabont seems to be drawn to the most crowd pleasing elements in the King aesthetic; he emphasizes the sentimentality of the work over the suspense or horror.
For all Darabont's efficiency, however, this is workmanlike cinema, the kind that appeals to the prejudices and inchoate beliefs of the mass public—in a higher form of justice, in an afterlife, in a racial equality that is not particularly equal.

SPLICEDwire | "The Majestic" review (2001) Frank Darabont, Jim Carrey
Affable alchemy is the specialty of director Frank Darabont -- the man behind the affecting sentimental sincerity of "The Shawshank Redemption" and "The Green Mile" -- and he's just about the only big-budget, soft-sell director in the business who could pull off this kind of potentially cloying picture without sending it into sugar shock.
Darabont infuses "The Majestic" with powerfully poignant imagery, like the scene of Harry taking down the photo of Luke and the memorial banner that has hung in the theater's empty box office window for nine and a half years.
Darabont also trades on some contrived moments like a cutesy first kiss shared between Carrey and Holden atop a lighthouse in front of a very artificial sunset and the tearful bedside colloquy between father and "son" after Landau has a heart attack.

Darabont's smashing success directing Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman as resilient lifers in "The Shawshank Redemption" marked the first time King's sentimental sweep, leisurely pace and grandiose symbolism had really made it from page to screen intact.
Inevitably, Darabont has stripped King's present-day narrative, in which retired prison guard Paul Edgecomb (veteran character actor Dabbs Greer), confined to a nursing home and troubled by nightmares, begins to reflect on what he witnessed 60 years earlier, down to the barest of framing devices.
For Darabont and King, the Green Mile is a metaphorical vision of the world, where we all wait for our names to be called.
