Frank was de eerste astronaut van een bezoekende vlucht die ook in het Amerikaanse deel van ISS mocht werken.
Ook werden er verschillende hart metingen gedaan, hiervoor moest Frank een soort harnas aan trekken, en tijdens de proef werd telkens zijn bloeddruk gemeten, dit alles werd gedaan om te kijken hoe het hart zich houd in gewichtloze toestand.
De Sojoez TM-34 was in totaal 199 dagen in de ruimte geweest.

Frank De Winne, a former Belgian Air Force pilot and now a member of ESA’s 16-strong astronaut corps, follows in the footsteps of a series of European astronauts who have already visited and worked on board the Space Station.
De Winne, whose flight is sponsored by the Belgian Federal Office for Scientific, Technical and Cultural Affairs (OSTC), will become the fourth European astronaut to visit the International Space Station and the first European astronaut to work in both the Russian and American segments of the Space Station.
It was only in the summer of 2001 that De Winne received news that he was to begin training for this Soyuz 'taxi' mission and left the heat of Houston, USA, where he had been preparing as an ESA astronaut for a possible Space Shuttle flight.

During Allied Force, Frank De Winne was the detachment commander of the Deployable Air Task Force, a combined Belgian/Dutch detachment that flew about 2000 sorties during this Nato Campaign.
Frank De Winne has logged more than 2300 hours flying time on several types of high-performance aircraft including Mirage, F16, Jaguar and Tornado.

European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Frank De Winne, of Belgian nationality, is to fly to the International Space Station (ISS) on 30th October 2002 on board a Russian Soyuz taxi flight.
The Belgian Federal Office for Scientific, Technical and Cultural Affairs (OSTC) are providing the funding for De Winne’s flight and the related experimental programme.

ESA astronaut Frank De Winne, a former Belgian Air Force pilot, and his fellow crew members, Soyuz Mission Commander Sergei Zaletin and Soyuz Flight Engineer Yuri Lonchakov, are due to dock with the Space Station on Friday, 1 November at 06:00 CET (05:00 UT).
During his eight-day stay, De Winne will carry out a programme of 23 experiments in the fields of life and physical sciences and education, including four physical science experiments using the Microgravity Science Glovebox (MSG) — an important research facility designed and developed in Europe.
