Frank Finlay received Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award nominations for his performance as William Shakespeare's Iago in Stuart Burge's 1965 film of Laurence Olivier's staging of Othello.
Finlay's many other films include The Longest Day; Tony Richardson's The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner; Martin Ritt's The Molly Maguires; Bob Clark's Murder by Decree; Alan Bridges' The Return of the Soldier (for which he received a BAFTA Award nomination); Franco Zeffirelli's Sparrow; and Eric Styles' Dreaming of Joseph Lees.
Finlay was made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the 1984 New Year's Honours List, and was presented with his CBE by the Queen in February 1984.

Frank Finlay, CBE (born 6 August 1926 in Farnworth, in Bolton, Lancashire, England) is a British stage, film and television actor of English, Irish and Scottish descent.
Finlay's original stage performance of Iago as an NCO left critics unmoved but then received high praise when the play was filmed and earned him an Academy Award nomination.
Finlay also played a Sancho Panza who was not especially fat, opposite Rex Harrison's Don Quixote, in the 1973 British made-for-television film The Adventures of Don Quixote, for which he won a BAFTA award.

In 1965, when the production was made into a film, it was Finlay’s performance that was showered with critical praise — he was nominated for an Academy, Golden Globe and BAFTA awards and won the Best Actor Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.
Othello was Frank Finlay’s eighth film, although he had played minor roles in all but the previous one, A Study in Terror (1965), a Sherlock Holmes film in which he was Inspector Lestrade.
With his bushy eyebrows, heavy eyelids and strong facial features, Finlay has never been, even at the start of his career, a conventional handsome leading actor.
