Frank Forde soon advanced in the Labor ranks and when Labor won the 1929 elections he became Assistant Minister for Trade and Customs in the Scullin government.
Forde was a loyal deputy, and in 1941 when Labor returned to power he became Minister for the Army, a vital role in wartime.
In 1945 Curtin died, and as Deputy Leader Forde was commissioned by the Governor-General as Prime Minister on 6 July.

The left wing and trade union group in the Caucus backed him because his rival, Frank Forde, had supported the economic policies of the Scullin government.

Matthew Forde and Jessie Edgar were married in Scotland in 1850, and in that same year came to America, settling in Buffalo, N. Y., where he engaged in railroading, in which business he continued until his death, which occurred on Jan. 12, 1881.
Forde began the practice of law in the office of the late United States senator, Preston B. Plumb, with whom he was associated until 1875, when he formed a partnership with Almerin Gillett, with whom he remained in an active practice until 1880.
Forde's first wife died in December, 1882, leaving a daughter, Jessie L., a teacher in the State Normal School at Emporia, who at the present time is a student at Columbia University in pursuance of a Master degree.

Although Frank Forde was officially Curtin's deputy, Chifley became the minister Curtin most relied on, and he controlled most domestic policy while Curtin was preoccupied with the war effort.

Aware of his lack of education, Curtin read avidly on politics and socialism and was much influenced by the English socialist Tom Mann who was in Australia from 1902 to 1909, and by two Victorians, the politician Frank Anstey and the secretary of the Victorian Railways Union, Frank Hyett.
Curtin was a regular speaker at political rallies and a very capable writer in Labor and socialist newspapers.
Curtin regained the seat of Fremantle in 1934 and in 1935 defeated the Queensland Member for Capricornia, Frank Forde, by one vote to become the Federal Labor leader.
