  Frank Gorshin, 'Batman' Riddler, Dies at 72 - New York Times
Frank Gorshin, a prolific actor and impressionist whose career was long identified with a questionable character, the Riddler on television's original "Batman," but later highlighted by his Broadway impersonation of a more amiable one, George Burns, died on Tuesday in Burbank, Calif. He was 72.
Gorshin was a hard-working but hardly famous character actor and nightclub regular when he was chosen to play a bodysuited misanthrope with a taste for bad puns and mayhem.
Gorshin is survived by a son, Mitch, of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Dottie Roland of Pittsburgh; and a grandson, Brandon.

Frank Gorshin, who died on Tuesday aged 72, made many film and television appearances but was most memorable as the frenzied Riddler in the 1960s hit television show Batman.
Gorshin was the only Batman actor nominated for an Emmy, and many fans of the series considered that Jim Carrey's version of the Riddler in the film Batman Forever (1995) failed to match up to Gorshin's.
Born in Pittsburgh on April 5 1934, Frank Gorshin was the son of a rail worker and a sempstress.

Having served as an entertainer during the Korean War, Gorshin appeared as an impressionist on The Ed Sullivan Show, but was upstaged by the Beatles on the very same show.
Though he has been in a large number of movies and even more TV guest appearances, Gorshin is best known for playing the Riddler in TV's Batman series, in green suit and bowler hat with a maniacal laugh.
Gorshin appeared in the season finale of CSI soon before his death from lung cancer and emphysema in a Burbank hospital on 17th May 2005.

Gorshin's own rise took him much further, to fame as an impressionist on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and as the Riddler, the cackling bad guy on "Batman." Since 2002, he had played George Burns in the one-man play, "Say Goodnight, Gracie," on Broadway and on the tour that brought him home to Pittsburgh last year.
Gorshin was performing here in "Goodnight, Gracie" and visiting those family memories, he was already fighting cancer, for which she was quietly taking him for treatments.
