The son of Frederick Rudolph and Amelia Gotch, Gotch was born and raised on a small farm three miles south of Humboldt, Iowa.
Gotch and Hackenschmidt wrestled at Chicago's Dexter Park Pavilion on April 3, 1908 to a crowd of over 40,000.
Gotch continued to win until April 1, 1913, where he was beaten by Estonian wrestler Georg Lurich in Kansas City.

In 1961 he adapted the ring name of Karl Gotch (after Frank Gotch), and began a successful stint in the American Wrestling Association, where he won the AWA Ohio Heavyweight Title in 1962.
Gotch also got involved in a series of feuds with the "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers.
Gotch wanted a shot at the NWA World Heavyweight title, and Rogers wanted to avoid getting in the ring with a wrestler he feared would shoot on him, beating him for real and stealing the championship that way.

He was indeed the overwhelming favorite in his first wrestling match with Frank Gotch in Chicago in 1908, with most predicting a brief match (Hack won most of his battles in less than 10 minutes).
Gotch had Hackenschmidt in his famous toehold which usually led to a pin or in the opponent conceding; Gotch had broken a couple legs of opponents, and Hackenscmidt didn't want that to happen to him.
