EDINBURGH Rugby coach Frank Hadden pointed a finger at referee Rob Dickson accusing the official of failing to make a punishment truly reflect the crime in a key incident as the Gunners crashed to a 19-10 defeat by Borders at Galashiels.
Leading 10-6 and attacking the home line with a trademark rolling maul Edinburgh seemed set to increase their advantage and in all likelihood kill the match only for Jacobsen to be severely provoked into breaking off to swipe at a rival he perceived to be attempting to disrupt illegally.
Well, it was obvious Hadden was not enamoured by the decision to play a curtain-raiser in conditions where the turf was always going to cut up.

Yet if that aspect of Hadden’s roll-call demonstrated an even-handedness that has not always been apparent in the schemes, the strategies and the outright subterfuges of other international coaches, another element of his selection ought to have set alarm bells ringing throughout the wider community of Scottish rugby.
A cursory examination of some of the most celebrated Scotland sides of all time is enough to demonstrate the value of exiled players: seven were involved in the Grand Slam side of 1925, five in the 1990 version, and a staggering nine in the team that beat England at Murrayfield in 2000.
His rubbishing of Scottish rugby as a whole made it refreshing to hear Hadden begin his reign as Scotland coach with a declaration of faith in the fundamental worth and quality of the sport in Scotland.

Yet if it is premature to hail Scotland's return to the top of world rugby, Frank Hadden, the interim coach, was in no mood to extinguish his players' celebrations with the sort of Calvinist fervour Jim Telfer was wont to apply on such occasions.
The hand of Hadden was evident in the style Scotland adopted against the Barbarians, for the width they wanted put on the ball was clear from the way they handled even the first kick-off.
Perhaps Hadden was simply being cunning in airing the subject of remuneration as a critical issue in whether he decides to put himself forward as Scotland coach.

Frank Hadden gets Scotland in groove - Telegraph
Perhaps wisely, Hadden ensured that the training games were touch rugby only, mindful that the agendas of some of those involved could turn a full contact session into something akin to bloody combat.
Speaking at the official civic welcome to Scotland's World Cup base in St Etienne yesterday, Hadden expressed satisfaction with the fitness and skills of the players he has brought here, but admitted that the presence of some of those he had overlooked had added a certain spice to proceedings in training.
It was typical of Hadden's World Cup warm-up programme that even a couple of touch rugby sessions should have been marked by a level of intensity never reached in Scotland's preparations for previous tournaments.

There was a time when, by his own admission, Scotland's coach Frank Hadden used to over-complicate things a little.

Hadden's rise to prominence is one of those classic 'overnight' success stories that has actually taken 20 years to achieve.

Against such a backdrop, the suspicion had to be that the final element of Hadden’s pre-season preparations would be to crawl under a table, curl up in a ball and sob quietly to himself, yet there was a surprisingly jaunty aspect to his conversation on Friday as he anticipated the campaign ahead.
Hadden could be forgiven for viewing the first few weeks of the Celtic League as a holding operation, but he rejected forcefully the suggestion that his side would simply be biding their time unti the injury situation improves: “We can’t afford to do that,” he stressed.
Yet Hadden, with the innate concern of the schoolteacher he used to be, is cautious about putting too much responsibility on young shoulders.
